A five-year-old dog named Kelsey has been praised as a hero for helping to save the life of her owner who slipped in the snow and broke his neck.

The man, Bob, was alone when he left his Michigan farmhouse on New Year’s Eve to collect firewood. Expecting a journey of only several meters, Bob was wearing just long johns (秋褲), a shirt and slippers when he went outside, although the temperature was around -4℃.

After the accident, he was unable to move in the snow. Fortunately, Kelsey came to his assistance.

“I was shouting for help, but my nearest neighbor is about 400 meters away, and it was 10:30 pm,” Bob explained. But my Kelsey came. By the next morning, my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.”

Bob’s companion kept him warm by laying on top of him. She licked his face and hands to keep him awake. “Kelsey kept barking but never left my side,” Bob recalled. She kept me warm. I knew I couldn’t give up and that it was my choice to stay alive.”

Bob spent 19 hours in the freezing cold. When he finally lost consciousness, his dog kept barking. Finally, hearing the barking, Bob’s neighbor discovered him at 6:30 pm. on New Year’s Day and called the emergency services at once. When Bob arrived in hospital, his body temperature was below 21℃. However, doctors were surprised to find that he didn’t have any frostbite (凍瘡). They believed it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep him warm. You have just won five million yuan in a lottery (彩票)—how would you spend it? Before you know it, ten minutes had gone on daydreaming. There is a time and a place for daydreaming, but we don’t have much control over that. Isn’t it worrying that an estimated 30 to 50 percent of our waking time is spent daydreaming? What if your dentist is having that lottery daydream while removing your rotten tooth?

Some studies suggest daydreaming makes us unhappy because we are not focusing on what is around us but are instead thinking about the past or future. However, a recent study published in the journal Neuropsychologica finds that mind-wandering can be of benefit to us. The researchers measured the brain patterns of more than 100 people using an MRI (核磁共振成像) scanner. This data was compared with tests on creative ability and a questionnaire on how much their minds usually wandered. Those whose minds wandered the most scored higher in creative ability tests and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine.

Being efficient at mind-wandering means you can zone out and then naturally tune back in without missing any important point or step. Christine Godwin, the lead author of the latest study from the Georgia Institute of Technology, says that if you are focusing on difficult tasks, your performance will drop if your mind wanders, “But when tasks are easy, people who have high cognitive ability can let their minds wander because it does not affect their performance. You maybe thinking about upcoming goals or problem-solving. These are some of the positive sides to mind-wandering.”

Mind-wandering can vary between being more practical or more emotional. What mind-wandering seems to be best at, researchers say, is coming up with new solutions to old problems. So, it’s not always a waste of time!

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem. Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now, two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon.

The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (原型) of its flying bicycle. Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly. “It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed,” he adds.

Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company’s main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors (交疊式旋翼)to power the vehicle.

The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams.

In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.

Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack “is built around safety from the start.” In his words, “reliability is the most important element of it. We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.”

The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams. Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute (降落傘) that can be used should there be an emergency. “It starts to work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot,” he adds. Mr. Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon.

34. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to .

A. the jet stream

B. the engine

C. the Jetpack

D. the parachute

35. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?

A. To describe the problems of inventing flying vehicles.

B. To introduce the latest development of flying vehicles.

Stay Smart When Shopping the “Sales”

We’ve already gone through Singles’ Day and Black Friday. Now, it’s on to “Double Twelve” and Christmas Sales. So, like me, 36 you probably soon will be.

November to January is peak time for shoppers, and retailers (零售商)are counting on us to open our wallets. 37 there are dozens of ads offering “deep discounts” for clothes, shoes and even holiday trips. And then there are the coupons(優惠券). Gee! A 500-80 coupon! I can get 500 yuan’s worth of stuff and I only pay 420 yuan! But, beware, this is a clever marketing trick that attracts you to spend more than you planned…38

They have some other tricks, too. There is the “Buy one and get the second one for half price.” They’ve just got you to spend more. Another trick is “marking down” a price tag. The price tag on that beautiful winter coat says 1,000 yuan, but that price is crossed out and the new price is 350 yuan. 39 The real price may actually be just 350 yuan and the retailer wants you to think otherwise.

40 Before the sales begin, check out the items you want online or in the shops. Then compare the price with the “sales” price to see if they’re really cheaper. And it’s also a good idea to decide how much you can afford to spend and keep to that limit.

A. when I shop the “sales”

B. if you’re not already broke,

C. these coupons are really great.

D. Wow! What a bargain! But, is it?

E. retailers are great psychologists!

F. When I open my phone or computer,

G. If you want to avoid the tricks, you have to plan ahead.

After studying Mandarin (普通話) at a University in London, I decided to further develop my language skills in Beijing. My choice of 41 was The Hutong School.

The Hutong School not only 42 language classes but also helps with accommodation, visa, and anything you could 43 need help with. They also organize 44 events, which is nice when living somewhere you don’t actually 45 anyone.

After a 10-hour flight, I 46 early in the morning. I 47 up my suitcase, made my way to the exit and met the Hutong School representative. He took me to my 48,which was located in Dongzhimen, a really nice and 49 location, only 2 stops to Tiananmen Square. However, the apartment was not quite as “nice” as 50 on the website. And I just had two 51: a German guy who would be there for four months learning 52, and a Spanish guy who works for The Hutong School.

After 53 in, the representative took me to 54 with the local police, which you need to do as a “resident”. Then, he took me to The Hutong School to 55 a level assessment, arrange my 56 and take me to meet my teachers.

The school is, well, 57 of what one would expect or is implied by the 58 not actually located in the Hutongs, but located on the 15th floor of a skyscraper. Obviously it was less charming but it did 59 for great views.

There, I had a 2-hour private class every day and my teachers were just lovely. Being in China and constantly being completely 60 in Chinese improved my Mandarin so much.

62(actual), there is a new recycling program at our school, which aims to help us create 63 better environment. The recycling we’ve planned is simply a three-part program: sorting, collecting and delivering. The first part-sorting is also the 64(hard) one.
