雅尼是当今世界著名的新世纪音乐作曲家和演奏家；但在他的自传《倾听雅尼》（YANNI IN WORDS）里，他更倾向于称自己的音乐为现代器乐（Contemporary Instrumental）。
雅尼1954年出生于希腊卡拉马塔（Kalamata），后加入美国国籍。1972年，毕业于美国明尼苏达大学。出于对音乐的热爱，毕业后走上音乐之路。1980年，录制了第一张专辑Optimystique，至今已发行出版十余张专辑，两度被格莱美奖提名，其作品在过去十年中一直是奥林匹克运动会广播音乐的最爱。曾在希腊雅典帕特农神庙，印度泰姬陵，中国紫禁城，英国伦敦阿尔伯特大厅，美国拉斯维加斯及波多黎各的莫洛城堡举办过音乐会。
雅尼代表作之一的《夜莺》已被选入九年级人教版音乐教材。
