這個世界上有兩種人，一種是刺蝟，另一種是狐狸。
There are two kinds of people in this world, one is the hedgehog and the other is the fox.
他們代表了2種完全不同的人生策略。
They have two completely different strategies for life.
這個故事的源頭是古希臘的一則寓言。
The source of this story is an ancient Greek fable.
在這則寓言裡，狐狸設計了很多複雜的策略來進攻刺蝟，而刺蝟的應對策略只有一個：蜷縮成一個長滿尖刺的球。
In the fable, the fox came up with a lot of clever strategies to attack the hedgehog, while the hedgehog had only one way to respond — to roll up into a spiked ball.
這當然是個簡化到不能再簡化的故事，但它蘊含的智慧卻經常讓我深思。
This is, of course, a very simple story. However, the wisdom it contains often makes me ponder.
狐狸知道很多小事，也會很多東西。
The fox knows many things and have many skills.
狐狸型的人雖然在所有的領域都不是最頂尖的專家，但他們對很多領域都略通一二。
Although the fox-type people are not the top experts in all fields, they know something about many fields.
他們理解世界的複雜性，並且將自己與這個複雜的系統深度結合。
They understand the complexity of the world and combine themselves with this complex system.
他們經常在各個領域之間跳來跳去，往往會帶來創新的火花。
They jump in and out of various fields, often bringing about sparks of innovation.
狐狸不僅從他們認同的觀點中獲取知識。
Foxes not only acquire knowledge from the perspective they agree with.
他們在面對自己不認同的觀點時，也會拿走自己可以用的部分。
When faced with opinions that they do not agree with, they will also take away what they can borrow from.
狐狸象徵著靈活應變的能力。
The fox symbolizes the ability to be flexible.
他們在面對突如其來的挑戰時能有更多的應對方案，有時候甚至能很好地預測未來的困境。
When faced with unexpected challenges, they will have more solutions, and sometimes they can even predict the challenges that are going to happen.
而刺蝟，只知道一件大事。
The hedgehog, on the other hand, only knows one important thing.
刺蝟型的人願意把任何複雜的東西都往自己知道的這件大事上歸納。
Hedgehog-type people tend to interpret any complicated things with this thing that they know.
也正因為如此，他們所涉及的領域往往很單一，但卻能在這個領域鑽研到深處。
Because of this, they often focus on one specific field, and they can delve deeply into it.
這就像自然界中的刺蝟一樣，遇到一切情況時，它都只有一個解決方案：蜷縮成球。
Like a hedgehog in nature, under whatever situation, they have only one solution — to roll up into a ball.
這個方法很笨，但在面對絕大多數危險的時候真的很管用。
This method might seem stupid, but it really works when facing most of the dangers.

Which animal are you like?
你是狐狸？還是刺蝟？
Are you a fox? Or a hedgehog?
不，或許我們不能被這樣一個問題迷惑住了，好像一個人必須是其中一種。
No, maybe we shouldn’t be puzzled by such a question, as if a person must be one of them.
2017年8月26日，耶魯大學的校長 Peter Salovey 在對入學新生演講時就說：“我們從‘偉大的刺蝟’和‘偉大的狐狸’身上都可以學到很多。但是在大學階段，還是希望大家多多效仿狐狸。”
On August 26, 2017, Peter Salovey, President of Yale University, said in his address to the freshmen: “You will learn about and from some brilliant hedgehogs and brilliant foxes. But at this stage of your education, I want to urge you to emulate the fox.”
