Born in Japan, and well-traveled throughout the Far East and the western world, Sara has also lived in California, Texas, and New York. Sara earned a B.F.A. from the University of San Diego (who awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011), and a degree in Interior Architecture from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Sara is a Board Member of Ballroom Marfa, a contemporary art space in Marfa, Texas, with a focus on allowing freedom of artistic expression through culturally impactful art. She is also an active member on the art's council of the America's Society and the Design Leadership Network.

Sara Story likes creating a juxtapostion between ornate and minimal, saturation and austere, old and new. A contemporary interior can have classic influences – think pairing a beautiful Neoclassical desk with an Eames chair. It gives your space a sense of depth 。

In 2012, Sara launched her first product line, Sara Story Design Wallpaper, which was inspired by her travels and love of Asian design. Transforms traditional Asian motifs for a contemporary audience with both classic and edgier tastes.Sara is currently completing her second line of wallpaper and first fabric collection, which will be available through Holland & Sherry.

Since founding her eponymous design firm in 2003, her projects propelled Sara onto the design world's radar, and Elle Decor magazine named Sara one of the "Top 5 to Watch." NY Spaces named her to the Top 50 Designers in New York. Her projects have appeared in Architectural Digest, Interior Design, Wall Street Journal and The New York Times to name a few.
