隕石(meteorite)也稱"隕星"，是地球以外脫離原有運行軌道的宇宙流星或塵碎塊飛快散落到地球或其它行星表面的未燃盡的石質、鐵質或是石鐵混合的物質。
大多數隕石來自於火星和木星間的小行星帶，小部分來自月球和火星。隕石大體可分為石質隕石、鐵質隕石，石鐵混合隕石。
在古代，人們往往把隕石當做聖物。比如，古羅馬人把隕石當做神的使者，他們在隕石墜落的地方蓋起鐘樓來供奉。匈牙利人則把隕石抬進教堂，用鏈子把它鎖起來，以防這個"神的禮物"飛回天上。伊斯蘭教聖地麥加也有一塊隕石，被視為"聖石"。在一些文明古國，還常常用隕石作為皇帝和達官貴人的陪葬。

如何鑑定隕石？
一、是否有融殼
隕石在穿過大氣層時，會因為摩擦而劇烈燃燒，這種燃燒會在隕石表面形成釉質，也就是融殼。融殼是平滑有光澤的，因此是隕石的一個明顯特徵。
二、是否有氣印
由於在大氣層中燃燒時，隕石受熱並不均勻，以及一些其他因素，在表面上會有氣印，氣印看起來就像是拇指按壓的手印；不同的隕石，它的氣印形狀也不相同。
三、是否有磁性
無論是石隕石還是鐵隕石，其含鐵量都是地球上的一般石頭無法相比的。一塊磁鐵就能辨別出這是否是真正的隕石。據數據統計，超過九成的隕石，都帶有不同程度的磁性。
四、是否有球粒
由於隕石內部結構的特殊性，在融殼之後的斷面上，可以看到球粒，或是其他的金屬顆粒。這一步僅靠肉眼較難識別，建議準備一個高倍放大鏡來進行仔細的觀察。
五、是否高密度
隕石的密度相對普通石頭高，用手掂量就能感到明顯的不同。
