被蘇東坡譽為“八月十八潮，壯觀天下無”的中國錢塘潮與巴西亞馬遜潮、印度恆河潮並稱世界三大涌潮，是天體引力和地球自轉的離心作用，加上杭州灣喇叭口的特殊地形所造成的特大涌潮。
The Qiantang River in east China’s Zhejiang Province is home to one of the world’s three most impressive tidal events, with waves reaching as high as 30 feet (nine meters), about the height of a three-story building. The other two places with seasonal monstrous waves are the Amazon River in Brazil and the Ganges River in India.

比潮水更壯觀的，或許還有不遠萬里慕名而來、為了一睹大自然奇觀的熱心遊客們。今年，據浙江省海寧市旅遊、宣傳等部門的初步統計，沿江一線觀景地27日當天共吸引了超過15.7萬遊客駐足觀看。
A total of 157,000 tourists witnessed the bores along the Qiantang River on Thursday, according to the local tourism authorities in Haining City.
由於受月球和太陽引力的影響，潮之強弱呈現規律性變化，每月的農曆初一至初五、十六至二十均為大潮日，一年有120多個觀潮佳日。其中，每年的農曆八月十五過後，在差不多為期4天的時間裡是觀賞錢塘潮的最佳時期。春分和秋分兩個節氣前後，湧潮更為壯觀。
浙江省海寧鹽官鎮為觀潮第一勝地，故亦稱"海寧潮"。觀海寧潮不限於農曆八月十八，海寧潮一天二次，白天稱潮，夜間稱汐，晝夜間隔12小時。

The perfect time for tidal sightseeing falls around four days before and after the fifteenth day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. But those who cannot make it around this time of the year should not worry. There are more than 120 days year-round when daredevils can catch the sights of the massive waves traveling fast and furiously.
The town of Yanguan in Haining City provides one of the best viewing platforms to witness the wonderful moment the incoming high tide and the outgoing tide collide in a narrow channel and make a tremendous wave.
除了領略白天一線潮水的壯觀，據說在半夜觀潮更是別有一番景象。觀潮公園是聽夜潮的最好地點，還可以登上佔鰲塔從高點俯瞰，不過要早點去才能佔到好位置。
People can watch the bores not only during daytime, but also in the evening, enjoying the view while avoiding the crowds.

中秋觀潮的風俗由來已久，早在漢代枚乘的《七發》一文中就有相當詳盡的記述。漢以後此風更盛，在宋代達到了空前的巔峰。
Watching the Qiantang River tidal bore is an ancient and popular Mid-Autumn Festival tradition going as far back in time as 2,000 years, especially during the Song Dynasty. Many in east China are still keen on enjoying the natural wonder with the full moon in the background.
錢塘江衝浪賽是世界上唯一的內河衝浪賽事，它打破了衝浪只是一項海洋運動的大眾認知，創造了“內河衝浪”這一獨特的概念，成為一項具有獨特魅力的世界級衝浪賽事。
因為錢塘江水是淡水和海水的混合體，浮力和海洋不一樣，加上錢塘江水含沙量特別大，給衝浪選手帶來一個很大的挑戰。在錢塘江裡衝浪，需要兩名選手配合完成。
據瞭解，為積極備戰2020年東京奧運會衝浪項目比賽，去年國家體育總局已正式將“國家衝浪集訓隊”落戶杭州，並加速籌建衝浪基地。除了這些“弄潮兒”們，今年還有專業的跑步選手、自行車選手、輪滑選手和滑板選手應邀參與追潮挑戰賽，和大自然奇觀比試了一番。
The Qiantang River tidal bore is an exciting phenomenon not only for onlookers, but also professional surfers. Eighteen surfers from nine countries gathered earlier in Hangzhou and Haining for an international surfing competition, seizing the opportunity to ride the massive waves.
Because of the depth and sand content of the Qiantang River, surfers have to join the competition in pairs. Many surfers said riding river tides differs from surfing in their familiar habitat, which was quite challenging.
據海寧市鹽官鎮水文站監測，總體來說，今年錢塘江潮水勢頭略遜於往年，但流速還是很快，對江堤兩岸的衝擊力不小。27日，潮高超過1.55米，颱風“潭美”的逐步逼近也為這次潮水“加了量”。
歷年來，錢江潮卷人事件時有發生，請不要到沒有安全防護措施的堤壩觀潮，更不要越過防護欄到江灘上觀潮。
2016年7月25日，杭州錢塘江邊，一名男子為撿眼鏡，擅自跳下江堤摔斷腰椎，動彈不得。

錢江潮水在杭州九溪江堤掀起巨浪，瞬間打溼了觀潮者。

掀起巨大的潮水將幾百觀潮客和一輛汽車衝到海塘腳下。
Safety always comes first when witnessing the tsunami-like phenomenon. The tidal wave seemed slightly less strong compared with previous years, according to Haining hydrologic station. However, when the waves gather their momentum on the Qiantang River, they could still travel at speeds of up to 43 kilometers (25 miles) per hour, or around 12 meters (39.3 feet) per second, according to reports, with the recent typhoon Trami adding another layer of risk.
