2000年10月，世界知識產權組織第35屆成員大會系列會議通過了建立“世界知識產權日”的提案，決定從2001年起將每年的4月26日定為“世界知識產權日”(The World Intellectual Property Day)。目的是在世界範圍內樹立尊重知識、崇尚科學和保護知識產權的意識，營造鼓勵知識創新的法律環境。每年的世界知識產權日，都會確定一個主題。歷年的主題如下：
2001年：“今天讓我們來創造未來”（Creating the Future Today）
2002年：“鼓勵創造”（Encouraging Creativity）
2003年：“知識產權與我們息息相關”（Making IP your Business）
