GRE閱讀機經

Passage

Editors of major United States newsmagazines have been criticized for reducing the amount of space these magazines devote to international news. According to these editors, however, readers are wholly to blame for the reductions. After all, the editors point out, sales of magazine issues that prominently feature international news stories have declined significantly, and declining sales reflect declining reader interest. Yet even if true, this evidence does not refute the contention that editors are merely passive instruments responding to reader interest. And that is clearly an untenable view, since editors can often intensify reader interest in a news topic by giving it frequent coverage.

GRE寫作機經

Argument

題目

The following appeared in a memo from the director of student housing at Buckingham College. “To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should build a number of new dormitories. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current trends, will double over the next 50 years, thus making existing dormitory space inadequate. Moreover, the average rent for an apartment in our town has risen in recent years. Consequently, students will find it increasingly difficult to afford off-campus housing. Finally, attractive new dormitories would make prospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham.”

題目要求

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

參考思路

1. The continuous increase in enrollment is questionable.

2. The author unfairly assumes that the students are poor.

3. New dormitories would not be the key factor to attract prospective students.

Issue

題目

Some people believe that scientific discoveries have given us a much better understanding of the world around us. Others believe that science has revealed to us that the world is infinitely more complex than we ever realized.

題目要求

Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.

參考思路

1. Thanks to those great scientists like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, people now understand what our world is and what it will be.

2. When the scientific discoveries contradict the established theories, a scientific evolution is ensuing, which results in the new cognitions of the old believes.
