Amazon offers staff thousands to quit, to test loyalty

SEATTLE, U.S. - Employee loyalty is a big thing at Amazon - which reportedly has a unique way of testing it.

Amazon boss and the world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos reportedly gives some of his employees an unusual offer each year - to accept a pile of cash and quit the company or decide to stay on.

Bezos, according to reports, offers some employees the unusual offer of taking $6,600 and never come back.

Reports also noted that once a year, the company offers to pay full-time associates at Amazon fulfilment centres up to $5.000 to leave the company, but there’s a catch - If these employees take the money and run, they can never work for Amazon again.

Currently, Amazon has 75 fulfilment centres across the United States and Canada — which is basically what the company calls its warehouses and shipping centres — where more than 125,000 full-time employees work.

And while it isn’t a huge sum of money, and taking the extra cash could be tempting - Amazon doesn’t actually want people to accept the offer.

Reports noted that when people actually receive the annual “pay to quit” ultimatum, the headline of the email reads - “Please Don’t Take This Offer.”

In 2014, in a letter to shareholders, Bezos outlined the reasoning behind the unusual practice.

He reportedly wrote, “We hope they don’t take the offer; we want them to stay. Why do we make this offer? The goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want. In the long-run, an employee staying somewhere they don’t want to be isn’t healthy for the employee or the company.”

According to reports, the idea actually originated from a shoe company called Zappos which Amazon acquired in 2009.

At the time, the shoe company would extend the same offer to staff for just $1,000.

But after acquiring the firm, Amazon incorporated the idea, which has lived on since then.

However, problems related to low pay still haunt the company.

Last month, hundreds of Amazon warehouse workers from Germany, Poland and Italy protested outside a building in Berlin where inside Bezos was scheduled to receive an award for innovation.

Protesters said that Amazon pays too little and offers too few benefits.

Then, last week, a similar demonstration was held by one of the U.K.’s biggest trade unions who protested outside an Amazon event in Manchester.

The protest was over the way the retail giant treats its warehouse workers.
