before和ago都能表示在一段時間以前,但是二者的內涵和具體用法有明顯的區別：
1、ago表示從過去或將來某一時間算起多少時間以前,意思是“距今……以前”，需和過去時或過去進行時連用；或者表示從現在開始追溯到過去一段時間,或者主句的謂語動詞表示的是經常、反覆發生的行為,以副詞的形式置於句末,可以用在現在完成時態中.例如：
如：
I visited him three days ago,but he had gone to Shanghai a week before．
我三天前去訪問他，但他已與那時的一週前到上海去了。
He said that his parents had died ten years before．
他說他父母親十年前都去世了。
I have never been to Beijing before.
我以前從未去過北京。
Have you ever seen a tiger before?
你以前見過老虎嗎？
I often go over the lessons that I have learned a few days before.
我經常複習幾天前學過的課程。
I have never been there before．
我以前從來沒有去過那裡。
2、ago指的是從現在起到過去時間的某一點的一段時間.這個時間狀語常與一般過去時態或過去進行時態連用，需要注意的是ago只能與一般過去時連用,但在since three years ago這類短語中能與現在完成時態連用.因為three years ago構成一個名詞短語,共同作since的賓格,意為"自從三年前以來".
His parents died ten years ago．
他父母十年前都去世了。
I was asked what I was doing a month ago.
我被問到一個月前我在做什麼。
I graduated from the college twenty years ago.
我二十年前從大學畢業。
I have taught English in this school since twenty years ago.
我從二十年前開始在這所學校教英語。
He has been here since three years ago.
他從三年前就在這裡了。
3、表示在某一時間點或事件以前時,只能用before,不用ago.因為這種用法是將before當作介詞或連詞使用.ago不具有這種功能.例如：
He will come back before six o'clock.
他將在6點鐘以前回來。
Where did your brother study before he joined the army?
你哥哥入伍前在哪裡學習？
It is hoped that this will be finished before the year 1995．
希望這件工作將在1995年以前完成。
