MARLWEAR

Paint a striking picture with marled yarns

#1 Textured Poncho by Deborah Newton

Knit in a festival of colors, a split-neck poncho is a go-with-everything three-season favorite. Loose and roomy, it drapes just so in double-stranded Heritage 150 from Cascade Yarns. Knit/purl basketweave patterning worked throughout texturizes the marled stripes, which are created by holding a dark plum strand together with a rainbow of other shades. The wide sleeves are picked up and knit after the shoulders are seamed. Multicolor garter-stitch borders finish the look.

#2 Raglan Turtleneck by Rebecca Kevelson

Impressionistic colors take center stage on this chunky turtle-neck. Holding two strands of richly variegated Pitturissimo from Louisa Harding Yarns/KFI together produces a kaleidoscopic effect with minimal effort: The main color remains the same throughout, while four contrasting colors are swapped at intervals to create subtle stripes. Fully fashioned raglan shaping forms the armholes, while double ribbing trims the edges.

#3 Cabled Front Pullover by Mari Lynn Patrick

Cozy meets cool in this raglan pullover. Framed by the hem, collar and fully fashioned sleeves, the marled front panel—knit with one strand each of black and white Zara 8 from Filatura Di Crosa/Tahki•Stacy Charles held together—blurs its cable-and-rib patterning for an op-art effect. The solid-color back and borders are all knit in a single strand of super-bulky Zara 14, also from Filatura Di Crosa.

#4 Color Block Pullover by Audrey Drysdale

Marled tones give a cabled pullover a modern-casual feel. Worked using two strands of Universal Yarn’s Deluxe DK Tweed held together throughout, it sports a center panel of honeycomb and woven cables. The patterning pops in the solid-color lower sections but takes on a softer quality in the two-color top half. Double-ribbed borders and moss-stitch side panels complement the high-texture look, while square armholes make for simple shaping.

#5 Striped Pullover by Kaffe Fassett

Marled stripes give a swingy turtleneck pullover a mod look for a modern age. The main body is worked using one main-color strand held together with one of seven contrasting colors in an expertly designed stripe sequence. The solid-color double-rib hem, cuffs and collar are worked using two strands of the main color held together. Rowan’s Felted Tweed offers added color depth. Modified drop shoulders and slim-fitting sleeves offset the oversized fit.

#6 Man's Hoodie by Josh Bennett

Marled color effects give a classic knit hoodie an edgier look. Worked using three strands of The Fibre Co./Kelbourne Woolens’ Knightsbridge held together throughout, it features four shades that are cleverly arranged to create a deconstructed ombré effect. The tailored hood is picked up and knit from the fully fashioned neckline. A tubular cast-on adds professional polish to the single-rib borders, while knit facings neatly encase the I-cord tie.

#7 Cable Front Pullover by Amy Herzog

Amy Herzog creates a wear-with-everything pullover that you can make your own: It’s shown here with a feminine scoop neck and three-quarter sleeves, but you can add a cozy cowl-neck collar and lengthen the sleeves if you wish. The front panel of stockinette cables produces a textural landscape within the marled tones of rustic wool Crestone, from Classic Elite Yarns’ MountainTop Collection. Back waist shaping follows the vertical dart lines for a fitted shape. Double ribbing trims the hem, cuffs and neckline.

#8 Broderie Anglaise Shawl by Bristol Ivy

Bristol Ivy uses a subtle twist to set apart her asymmetrical shawl. Knit in luminous Extra, a plump alpaca/merino blend from Blue Sky Fibers, it’s worked from a garter tab placed at the bottom point—rather than the traditional center top—with side and center increases creating the generous winged shape. Offset shaping begun midway creates a bias-knit fabric, angling the pattern bands of garter, stockinette and lacy broderie anglaise. Garter-stitch borders trim the edges.

TRANQUIL TWISTS

Whip up fresh cabled accessories in icy shades of blue and green.

#9 Cabled Shawl by Yoko Hatta (風工房)

Rhythmic lattice cables look more textural than sculptural in a sweeping fringed shawl. At 25”/ 63.5cm x 70”/177cm, the generously sized piece can be worn with anything from overcoats to evening ensembles, while Cleckheaton Australian Superfine Merino offers a beautiful balance between smoothness and definition. Double ribbing knit in at the top, bottom and sides frames the patterning and adds polish to the outer edges. Long fringe is looped along the ends in finishing.

#10 Maruna Hat by Irina Anikeeva

A quartet of traveling twisted-cable motifs make a sweet ski cap a showpiece at every angle. The patterns flow from the double-rib brim and diminish into the crown, which is shaped with decreases worked into the background of reverse stockinette. Knit seamlessly, the hat features a flattering snug yet slouchy fit. Buttery SimpliCria from HiKoo/Skacel Collection creates a soft-edged, heathered look that’s accented by a soft faux-fur pompom.

#11 Long-Line Scarf by Joan Forgione

A long-line scarf proves that plush, soft cables can also be sleek and graphic. Contrasting pattern panels—with traveling ribs on one side and staggered eight-stitch cable twists on the other—run the entirety of the scarf’s generous 80”/203cm length. The rib motifs worked throughout offer plenty of drape, while self-finished edges underline the modern look. It’s luxuriously cuddly in Dale Garn’s Cotinga, a luminous blend of merino and alpaca.

#12 Over Knee Socks by Yoko Hatta (風工房)

Pompom-tipped I-cord ties give a touch of folkloric charm to a set of cabled stockings. Worked in the round from the double-rib cuff, they’re shaped with increases to the calves and tapered down to the ankle. Alternating open-twist and mini two-stitch cables run the length of the leg and instep. Stockinette heels and toes create a close fit, while double ribbing reinforces the soles. They’re sweetly feminine in softly haloed Cozi from Zealana.

#13 Cabled Sleeve Scarf & Pom Hat by Alexandra Davidoff

A classic hat and scarf set gets an elegant update that’s all in the details: trim twisted-rib edgings, a fun faux-fur pompom and a rich, glossy finish in merino/silk Venezia Worsted from Cascade Yarns. Worked in the round from the ribbed brim, the hat is knit in an allover pattern of alternating twisted cables. The cable crossings end when the crown shaping begins, which contributes to the slouchy fit. Knit in the same allover cable pattern, the scarf is also worked in the round, which creates a reversible piece and eliminates the need to reinterpret the cable pattern while knitting. For a witty twist, the deep ribbed borders are left open at the ends to resemble sleeve cuffs.

TRUE NORTH

Carol J. Sulcoski explores the Cowichan knitting tradition.

#14 Cowichan Style Pullover by Barb Brown

Outsize geometric motifs emblazon a Cowichan-inspired pullover. Worked seamlessly, it’s quick to knit in Sugar Bush’s lofty roving Chill Yarn. Three-needle bind-offs join the shoulders; the sleeves are picked up around the armholes and worked with short-row cap shaping. The garter-stitch shawl collar is completed in three parts, with short rows shaping the front sections. Single ribbing at the cuffs and hem adds polish. Stranded patterning creates a dense, ultra-warm fabric.

#15 Cowichan Style Socks by Edward Bourgo and Gayle Hildebrandt

Worked seamlessly from cuff to toe, a pair of boot socks sport an interpretation of the “Phoenix Rising” motif at the instep. The striping at the top of the cuff calls out the motif’s colors. Brown Sheep’s wool/mohair Lamb’s Pride Worsted offers plenty of warmth; the slip-stitch reinforced heel flap will help to keep the socks sturdy season after season. Single ribbing worked throughout the leg creates a snug fit.

ONE SHAPE, INFINITE STYLE

Two dreamy bouclé sweaters are the epitome of easy elegance.

#16 Bouclé Open Vest by Rebecca Kevelson

Rebecca Kevelson’s open-front cardigan—which can be left to drape naturally or fastened with a shawl pin—offers a feminine loungewear-inspired look. Subtle neck shaping creates a trim, tailored fit at the yoke.

#17 Bouclé Pullover by Rebecca Kevelson

Worked in the same dimensions as the cardigan but with gentle neck shaping, Kevelson’s pullover is a sportier alternative that can be layered over a collared shirt or thin-knit turtleneck or worn alone.

MAKING THE GRADE

Love working with color? Ombré sets and single-skein gradients will bring out your inner artist.

#18 Heartbeat Wrap by Laura Bryant

Subtle “heartbeat” chevrons embellish the ombré stripes that span a soft rectangular wrap. Two Merino Mia Gradient Packs from Prism—each featuring eight skeins hand-dyed in graduated shades—are combined to create the vivid interplay of taupe and marsala. Worked crosswise, the pattern is knit with intermittent increases and decreases, while the wrong-side row is simply purled. Wide garter-stitch borders are knit in to form clean edges. (You can make a cowl with the leftover yarn from this project)

#19 Floral Vest by Pat Olski

A sweet long-line tank knit in Fair Isle floral motifs offers an understated way to jump on the gradient bandwagon. Richly shaded in Koigu Wool Designs’ KPPPM, it sports successively lighter shades against a dark background. The piece is worked in the round to the underarm and features folded stockinette hems at the lower edge and armholes. The tailored shoulder straps and flattering scoop neckline allow the tank to be layered over a shirt or worn on its own as the weather warms.

#20 Striped Turtleneck by Melissa Leapman

Mod stripes in graduated shades add interest to a classic turtleneck pullover. Subtle waist shaping and set-in armholes form a tailored fit, while three-quarter sleeves keep it modern. Double ribbing trims the edges and collar. Knit it in the teal palette shown, or choose your own colors—the simple stripe sequence and neutral black backdrop make it easy to customize. Softly haloed Ultra Alpaca from Berroco offers a virtually infinite number of color combinations.

#21 Directional Blue Pullover by Vladimir Teriokhin

A panoply of shades and textures combine to create a showpiece of singular artistry. Knit in Superwash Merino Big Squeeze Bulky from Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts, this multidirectional pullover features a recurring pattern of stranded colorwork blocks—alternately worked with the floats to the right side—and garter ridges. The tapered front and back insets are knit separately and sewn in before the generous batwing sleeves are picked up and knit to the ribbed cuffs.

#22 Graphic Gradient Wrap by Wei Wilkins

Simple yet striking, a rectangular wrap alternates garter-ridge and mesh bands in a graphic pattern of mirrored chevrons. Yarn-over increases create the shape. The stripe sequence, worked in four neutral shades of Valley Yarns’ silk/mohair Southampton, broadens as it travels from the center outward. Knit using two strands held together throughout, the wrap is substantial enough for winter wear yet light enough to drape in a variety of ways.

#23 Lace Cowl by Alexandra Davidoff

A lacy cowl lavish with texture and color is knit using Jade Sapphire Exotic Fibres’ Mini Ombre Collection, which features six mini skeins of cashmere 6-ply specially selected to create a tonal effect. Worked lengthwise starting with the darkest color, the cowl sports chevon patterning with small and oversized eyelets and undulating reverse-stockinette bands. Wear it long to show off the gradient shades or double it for a crisp duotone look.
