Urban orienteering challenge

The city of Shanghai witnessed an exciting event this weekend, with groups of people running or walking past city landmarks with smiles and full of vitality.

Starting 7 am on Saturday, people wearing different colors were seen in the city's subway, smiling and chatting with each other. They were going to Shanghai Stadium to participate in the China Coordinates City Orienteering Challenge, an urban orienteering event.

The event was supported by Abbott, a global healthcare company, as the top sponsor for the third consecutive year.

"Abbott encourages people to enhance health consciousness and embrace a healthy lifestyle. City Orienteering Challenge is a perfect platform to do so," said James Chiu, President of Abbott Nutrition Business, North Asia.

Turning the city into a huge playground, the City Orienteering Challenge attracted more than 20,000 participants between the ages of 8 to 60 to walk across 15 districts in Shanghai following 37 themed routes.

Grouped into 4,000 teams, the participants needed to complete diversified tasks together to explore the beauty and vitality of the city. Generally, it took four to six hours for participants to complete every task along one selected route.

New routes, new teams

Compared with previous events, this year the event attracted more diversified participants including parent-child teams, a "Shark" team wearing shark-like costumes, an "Avengers" team that refused to take public transportation, as well as a "Singles' team" which gave its members a chance to date each other after the event.

Nearly half of the task points were newly added this year, making for a more unique and fun event. At the Shanghai Port Cruise City along the Huangpu River, participants were asked to learn from a sailor and make signals using semaphore flags.

Health-related tasks were also put into the 37 routes, which aimed to inspire more people to opt for a healthy lifestyle.

For 130 years, Abbott has brought new products and technologies to the world in nutrition, diagnostics, medical devices and branded generic pharmaceuticals, according to Chiu, adding that the company has brought life-changing technology to help people live their best possible life through the power of health.

"Abbott supports the event, aiming to encourage more people to realize the importance of healthy lifestyle," Chiu said.

"It's not only a slogan. We treasure the event in Shanghai very much as we hope it will be helpful to make people live a healthy lifestyle. Local residents must wish to take part in the event when they see participants wearing in colorful t-shirts walking on the streets."

Health challenges

"At Abbott, we also call for the same idea for our employees," said Chiu, adding that the company often organizes similar events to encourage their own employees to live a healthy lifestyle. A total of 625 Abbott employees participated in this year's Orienteering Challenge.

"A healthy lifestyle doesn't mean you have to go to gyms. For example, sometimes I take lunch in a restaurant far away from my office, and walk back my office for half an hour," Chiu told the Global Times. "This kind of lifestyle makes me comfortable."

Among all the participants, there was a group of special participants with health challenges; 28-year-old Helena was one of them. Helena's life went through a huge change at the age of 23, when she was diagnosed with diabetes.

"Some of my doctors suggest I not do vigorous sports due to my illness. But for me, running gives me the courage to fight for life," Helena said.

When Helena finished the competition, she said she felt fine, as she had continuously tested her glucose using Abbott's FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring system, which warned her that her glucose was declining.

"I have to eat something now," Helena said. "This system is really convenient for me to monitor my glucose anytime."

Abbott's revolutionary innovative system allows glucose readings to be accurately obtained in real time by simply scanning the reader over a small sensor that can be worn on the back of the upper arm. In the past, Helena had to use a medical needle to puncture her own fingers to test her glucose around 10 times each day. Fortunately, she now has a chance to use Abbott's new Monitoring system, which eliminates the need for routine finger pricks and the pain and hassle associated with it.

"I can't give up running. I'm lucky that the new technology helps me participate in marathons," Helena said. "I suggest that patients who also have diabetes should do exercises step by step."
