关于“罗汉钱”，历史上没有记载，连泉家丁福宝的《历代古钱图说》上都遗漏了它的资料，正因为如此，民间有不少传说。一说是十六世纪初，康熙皇帝派兵进西藏平叛，途中缺军饷，便向佛寺征集铜佛铸钱，为了凑数，连同18尊金质罗汉献缴，被一炉熔化铸钱，因而此钱金光灿烂，故称“罗汉钱”；二说是道光年间，杭州净慈寺有罗汉像500尊，一位虔诚的信徒偶然在罗汉像的背洞里摸出这种康熙钱，认为神赐，如获至宝，将摸出的铜钱称为“罗汉钱”。
事实上“罗汉钱”是专为康熙皇帝60寿辰而铸的一种祝寿钱。康熙是清代在位最久的皇帝，长达61年，康熙52年（1713年）3月，正是他60大寿，特命户部宝泉局（当时的造币厂）精铸一批“万寿钱”作为寿辰纪念，钱币背面左右为满文“宝泉”两字，表示北京户部宝泉局制造。
这种钱币做工尤为精美，由于有传说掺入金质罗汉的材料而铸，所以后人把它打制成戒指，或把它熔炼提出金子，或当作压岁钱赐予晚辈，或在女儿出嫁时作为压箱钱，致使存世数量越来越少，至今已成为泉家不易多得的少见品种。
