1. in order 整齊,秩序井然;狀況良好▽He was as busy as a bee trying to put the house in order. 他為了要把家裡弄得整整齊齊,忙得像一隻蜜蜂。

2. try out 測試,試驗;嘗試▽The approach seems good but we need to try it out in practice. 這個方法似乎不錯,但我們需要在實踐中試驗一下。▽Someone is willing to try out his luck through this movement. 有人很想在這場運動中試試他的運氣如何。

3. arise VI(arose, arisen)

(1)出現;發生;呈現,(由……)引起,(由……)產生▽Accidents often arise from carelessness. 事故往往起因於粗心。

(2)起身,起來▽He arose from his seat and said he was toughed by the story. 他從座位上站了起來說他被這個故事感動了。

4. harmony N:和諧,一致;融洽▽(in harmony with 與……協調一致)They realized the need to be in harmony with the environment. 他們意識到了與環境相協調的必要性。▽(out of harmony with 與……不協調)The violin was out of harmony with the rest of the instrument after I tried it out. 我試了一下後發現小提親拉得與其他樂器不協調。▽(live in harmony (with) (與……)和睦相處)I do believe it is possible for different ethnic groups to live together in harmony. 我確信不同民族的人可以融洽地生活在一起。

5. be blessed with 有幸,賦有(能力等),享有(幸福等);受惠於▽May our life be blessed with joy, love and virtue. 希望我們的生活裡充滿歡樂、關愛和美德。

注意:bless在口語中的用法非常重要:

(1)Bless me. 表示驚訝、喜悅、憤慨等情感,意為“哎呀/我的天哪/真想不到”。

(2)Bless you. 表示“願上帝保佑你(們);請多保重”(也可說成May God bless you.)

6. vain ADJ:

(1)自負的,自視過高的▽Too much praise can make a man vain. 過分的讚揚會使人自負。

(2)無結果的;徒勞的▽The local government made vain attempts to boom the economy. 當地政府幾次徒然嘗試想振興經濟。

7. otherwise ADV:

(1)否則,不然▽You shouldn’t be vain of your wealth now, otherwise you’ll lose your best friends. 你現在不要自傲於手頭的財富,要不然你會失去最好的朋友。

(2)在其他方面;除此以外▽The rent is a bit high, but otherwise the house is satisfactory. 這所房子租金貴了點,但在其他方面是令人滿意的。

注意:otherwise表示“否則,要不然”時,經常用於虛擬語氣,引出含蓄條件句。▽I’m not feeling very well today—otherwise I would do it myself. (otherwise= if I were feeling well) 今天我身體不太舒服,否則這事我就親自去做了。)

8. come out

(1)出版,發表▽What is the deadline of her new novel coming out? 她的新小說出版的最後期限是何時?

(2)真相大白;結果是▽The meaning of the passage comes out clearly in his interpretation. 經他一解釋,這篇文章的意義就明白了。

(3)(指花朵等)開始長出,開花▽The crocuses came out late this year because of the cold weather. 由於天氣寒冷,今年藏紅花開得晚。

注意:come out沒有被動語態,尤其是表示“出版,發表”時要與publish分開,後者可以用被動語態。

9. far from 完全不,遠非(後接名詞、動名詞或being+形容詞, being可省略)▽He is far from a fool. 他絕不是傻子。▽The schedule of the project is far from (being) tight. 這項工程的進度表安排得非常不緊湊。▽Far from working hard, he plays around. 他非但不用功,反而到處玩耍。
