日本以“科研”名義捕殺300多頭鯨魚，其中122頭為懷孕的母鯨
南冰洋上一艘捕鯨船的甲板上一頭小鬚鯨正被“研究”。
在每年的“科研”期間，稱其以科學研究為目的，日本捕殺超過300頭鯨魚。然而，動物權利活動分子認為做此項科研可以是非致命的，稱日本的行為只不過是偽裝著狩獵。據國際捕鯨委員會（IWC）最新公佈的會議記錄，在南冰洋2017-18季度南極海洋新科學鯨魚研究計劃（NEWREP-A）第三個任務中，日本研究人員屠殺鯨魚。
