1. 用作動詞，可以是及物動詞也可以是不及物動詞;可以指行動上的攻擊也可指言行上的攻擊。如：
The enemy attacked at night. 敵人晚上襲擊 。
His remarks were attacked in the papers. 他的言論在報上受到抨擊。
有時可指疾病或災害的襲擊，或指幹勁十足地著手幹，或指狼吞虎嚥地吃，或指解決或處理某問題等。如：
Worms attacked the cabbage plants. 蟲子侵襲了捲心菜。
He attacked the steak at once. 他立即狼吞虎嚥地吃起牛排來。
How would you attack the problem? 你將如何處理這個問題?
2. 用作名詞，表示一般性“攻擊”或“襲擊”時，多為可數名詞 ;表示疾病的“襲擊”或“發作”時，通常為可數名詞。如：
They were alarmed by a sudden attack. 突然襲擊使他們大為驚恐。
Another village in the area was also under attack. 這個地區的另一個村莊也受到襲擊。
He was seized with a slight attack of fever. 他有點輕微的發燒。
