(1)表示過去某一時刻正在進行的動作。比如：
He was doing shopping this time yesterday.
昨天這個時候他正在購物。
I was leaving for work when he came to see me.
他來看我時，我正要離開去上班。
We were having a discussion at that time.
那時我們正在討論。
What were you doing at nine last night？
昨晚九點時，你在做什麼？
I was doing my homework at this time yesterday.
昨天的這個時候我正在做作業。
I was cooking when she knocked at the door.
她敲門時我正在做飯。
What were you doing at 7 p.m.yesterday?
昨天晚上七點你在幹什麼?
(2)表示過去某一階段正在進行的動作。比如：
Peter and Sam were playing chess the whole afternoon yesterday.
彼得和山姆昨天一下午在下棋。
We were having a meeting from nine to eleven yesterday.
我們昨天從九點到十一點在開會。
They were swimming in the lake the whole morning yesterday.
他們昨天一上午在湖裡游泳。
I was visiting a friend of mine most of the afternoon.
我昨天下午大部分時間，都在一個朋友家裡。
What were you doing during the holiday?
這個假期你都在做什麼?
We were watching TV from seven to nine last night.
昨天晚上七點到九點的時候我們在看電視。
What was he researching all day last Sunday?
上週日他一整天都在研究什麼？
(3)表示過去某個過程中發生的動作，這個過程往往用時間狀語從句表示，說明動作發生的背景，從句中謂語動詞用過去進行時，而發生的動作用一般過去時表示。比如：
While I was watching TV, the telephone rang.
我在看電視時，電話鈴聲響了。
As we were leaving, some of our friends arrived.
我們正要離開，我們的幾個朋友來到了。
When we were playing in the playground, it began to rain.
我們正在操場上玩的時候，天下起了雨。
They were watching TV when I entered the room.
我進入房間時，他們正在看電視。
When the car exploded I was walking past it.= While I was walking past the car it exploded.
我在步行通過汽車時，汽車爆炸了。
I was walking in the street when someone called me. 我正在街上走時突然有人喊我。
They were traveling along a highway across the desert when their car broke down.
他們沿著一條橫穿沙漠的高速公路旅行時突然汽車拋錨了。
3.過去進行時和一般過去時的區別
過去進行時強調過去某時刻或者階段動作的進行，不表明動作的完成，而一般過去時表示過去某動作已發生，表明動作已完成。比較例句：
1）He was writing a composition last night. He's going to finish it today.
他昨天晚上在寫一篇作文。他打算今天完成。
2）He wrote a composition last night. He's going to hand it in today.
他昨天晚上寫了一篇作文。他打算今天交上去。
3）They were digging a well last winter. So far they haven't finished it.
他們去年冬天在挖井，至今還未完成。
4）They dug a well last winter.
他們去年冬天挖了一口井。
5）They were having a meeting yesterday.
他們昨天在開會。
6）They had a meeting yesterday.
他們昨天開了一個會。
7）She was singing songs last night.
她昨天晚上在唱歌。
8）She sang songs last night.
她昨天晚上唱了幾首歌。
