歌者便是那位被火車碾過的身首異處的丈夫，他正在傾訴自己的悲催愛情故事，從泣血的歌聲中可以聽出即便身首異處，即便已被埋在陰冷的太陽永遠無法照亮的松林中 （in the pines where the sun don’t ever shine ），這位痴情的丈夫依然用悲慼的歌聲在問：“My girl，my girl，don’t lie to me，Tell me where did you sleep last night。”他全然不顧究竟是誰害死了他，只是用近乎嘶啞而絕望的嗓音向她講述著自己在陰暗的松林深處整夜顫慄的處境（In the pines！in the pines！Where the sun will never shine. I will be shiver the whole night through）……
對於這樣悲切的來自的冥界的呼喚及傾訴，沒有人給出回應，因此，柯特科本在歌曲結尾處用那一聲洞穿滄桑苦旅的悲鳴，彷彿是在做出回應…….
