Lesson 4 An exciting trip

經常和現在完成時連用的副詞和副詞短語有:before(now)(〈在此〉以前);so far(到目前為止);up to now (直到現在);just(剛剛);already(已經);lately(最近);now(現在);疑問句和否定句中常用ever, yet, never, not… ever等。

I have just received a letter from my brother, Tim.

I have just received a letter from my old school, informing me that my former headmaster, Mr. Stuart Page, will be retiring next week.

He has been there for six months.

He is working for a big firm and he has already visited a great number of different places in Australia.

He has just bought an Australian car and has gone to Alice springs, a small town in the centre of Australia.

My brother has never been abroad before, so he is finding this trip very exciting.

exciting.adj.causing great interest or excitement

He is finding his new work far more exciting.

It was very different from modern car races but no less exciting.

A man was lying in the box on top of a pile of woollen goods.

He had had a long and uncomfortable trip, for he had been confined to the wooden box for over eighteen hours.

Inevitably you arrive at your destination almost exhausted.

Inevitably.adv.as is certain to happen

destination.n.a place to which sb/sth is going or being sent

exhausted.adj.very tired

Long car journeys are even less pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read.

On motorways you can, at least, travel fairly safely at high speeds, but more often than not, the greater part of the journey is spent on roads with few service stations and too much traffic.

By comparison, ferry trips or cruises offer a great variety of civilized comforts.

The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping.

you will arrive at your destination fresh and uncrumpled.

crumple.v.to fall down in an uncontrolled way because you are injured, unconscious, drunk, etc.
