銀元，起源於15世紀，始鑄於歐洲，16世紀傳入中國，光緒年間開始鑄造但直到民國時期才正式大量發行成為國幣。在100多年的時間裡在中國流通的銀元多達上千種，版本更是多達萬餘種，可以說是近代幣種的一個“大家族”。
