reptile /'reptaɪl/ n. 爬行動物
卑鄙小人用英語講有很多說法，其中一種是 reptile。這個單詞的本意是爬行動物，即 any animal that has cold blood and skin covered in scales , and that lays eggs. Snakes, crocodiles and tortoises are all reptiles(皮膚覆蓋鱗片的卵生冷血動物，蛇，鱷魚和烏龜都是reptile。) . 毒蛇鱷魚這類動物都給人以陰險狡詐卑鄙齷齪的感覺，所以說某人卑鄙，就可以說TA是 reptile。
small man
有部分英譯書籍中，也有不少把“小人”直接翻譯為small man的，並隨後解釋說就是small-minded(小心眼)或者second-rate people(不入流的人)。
petty /ˈpeti/ adj. 小規模的；小氣的；瑣碎的
還有一個詞petty，意思是“瑣碎的;小氣的;小規模的”也可以用來描述“小人”，曾經有一句“小人驕而不泰”就翻譯成the petty is arrogant without being at ease。
瞭解了一些對於“小人”的翻譯，
那麼“君子”又該如何翻譯呢?
直白一些的翻譯，我們可以把“君子”理解為好的人，就可以說成“the gentleman”, “the scholar”，“the good man”，“the superior man”，“intelligentle man”等。
除此之外還有一個比較地道的習慣用語straight arrow。arrow是“箭”，但straight arrow不是指“筆直的箭”，而是指“正人君子”。因為射箭的時候，只有筆直的箭才能正中靶心，而彎曲的箭往往會偏離方向，靠不住。Straight arrow早年曾經專指白人信賴的剛直的印第安勇士，現在straight arrow被用來泛指任何值得信賴，道德高尚的人。

I firmly believe in Adam, who is a straight arrow.
我非常信賴亞當，他是個正人君子。
