“哀悼”用英語怎麼說？
我們看一看中國日報英文版的新聞標題，是這樣寫的：
National time of mourning will be held to honor martyrs
將舉行全國哀悼活動紀念烈士
① “mourn”的在牛津詞典英文釋義是：to feel and show sadness because sb has died; to feel sad because sth no longer exists or is no longer the same
也就是：“（因失去…而）哀悼，憂傷 ”
和“mourn”相似的單詞意思是“grieve for”，它可以翻譯成：“為…而傷心”
比如杜甫的詩句：“出師未捷身先死，長使英雄淚滿襟”就可以翻譯成：How sad that he had to die before he gained victory,' leaving great men of succeeding generations to grieve for him.
又比如句子“我們也為伊拉克平民的傷亡而悲痛”可以翻譯成：
“We also grieve for the loss of civilian life in Iraq. ”
②“grieve”和“mourn”的區別是：
“grieve”指因所愛之人死亡而傷心，或因損失、失敗等而感到悲傷，這類傷感可以是公開表露的，也可以是壓抑於內心的。
而“mourn” 較正式用詞，指悼念死者或為某人之死而哀傷，側重表露於外的悲傷、哭泣。
③標題中還有一個“martyrs” [ˈmɑːtəz]
這個單詞在柯林斯詞典的意思是：A martyr is someone who is killed or made to suffer greatly because of their religious or political beliefs, and is admired and respected by people who share those beliefs.
簡單的來說就是“殉道者、烈士”
比如例句：For the revolutionary cause many martyrs left life and death out of consideration.
革命先烈為了革命事業把生死置之度外。
總結：
哀悼正式的說法就是“mourn”，非正式地表示“傷心”的說法可以用“grieve”
