為適應經濟發展和市場貨幣流通的要求，1999年10月1日，在中華人民共和國建國50週年之際，中國人民銀行陸續發行第五套人民幣（1999年版）。第五套人民幣共有1元、5元、10元、20元、50元、100元6種面額，其中1元有紙幣、硬幣2種。
