鈞瓷始創唐代，興盛於北宋，宋徽宗時被定為御用珍品，因朝廷命民間優秀工匠在禹州城內“古鈞臺”附近設官窯燒造官廷用瓷，故名“鈞瓷”。鈞臺位於河南省禹州市北門裡。據文獻記載:夏啟曾在今城南15華里的鈞臺坡宣誓即位，故有“夏啟有鈞臺之享”的傳說，並以“父傳子家天下”而著稱。唐代，禹州城門裡建禹王廟，廟前立山門臺基，命名“鈞臺”，此後附近相繼設窯燒造瓷器，因地名“鈞臺窯”，或謂其產品曰鈞瓷”。
