1. Practice makes perfect. 熟能生巧
這句話字面上的意思是「練習就可以造就完美」，通常用來鼓勵他人不要放棄努力。
A: I want to give up on playing piano. I always make so many mistakes.
我再也不要嘗試彈鋼琴了。我總是彈錯。
B: Don't give up. Practice makes perfect!
不要放棄，熟能生巧！
2. Don't judge a book by its cover. 人不可貌相
只憑書的封面是不會知道它的內容好壞的，這告訴我們不要以貌取人！不論面對什麼人事物，在下定論前一定要先更深入瞭解它！
A: He dresses in plain clothes and drives an old car. Who would know he is the richest man in town?
他穿著樸素又開舊車，誰會知道他是全鎮最有錢的男人呢？
B: So that's why people say “Don't judge a book by its cover“.
所以大家才會說人不可貌相嘛。
3. Great minds think alike. 英雄所見略同
當你跟別人的想法一樣，想表達支持的時候，用這句話就對了。這句話意指「聰明的人都有一樣的思想」，不但稱讚到了對方，也稱讚到自己了呢！
A: I want to save money. Let's go to the park instead of going to the movies.
我想省錢。我們今天去公園走走，不要看電影了。
B: I was just thinking we should do that, too.
我也是這麼想的。

英雄所見略同。
4. Birds of a feather flock together. 物以類聚
flock 作為動詞有「聚集、成群結隊而行」的意思，所以這句話直譯就是「有相同羽毛的鳥類就會聚在一起」，也就是我們常說的「物以類聚」。
A: Brian has skipped a lot of classes since he started to hang out with those bad kids.
Brian 自從跟那些壞孩子混之後就翹了很多節課。
B: Well, birds of a feather flock together.
唉，這就是物以類聚嘛。
5. Speak of the devil. 說曹操，曹操到
speak of 這個詞組是指「說到、論及」，而 devil 則是「惡魔」，十八世紀初有一種迷信的說法：”Speak of the devil and he’s sure to appear.” 只要你說到魔鬼，魔鬼就一定會現身。因此衍伸出「說到某人，某人就出現」的意思，也就是我們所說的「說曹操，曹操到」。
A: It’s bad manner of James to keep us waiting. He’s never on time. He’s already thirty minutes late!
James 讓我們這樣等他真是沒禮貌，他從來都不準時，他已經遲到三十分鐘了。

6. More haste, less speed. 欲速則不達
這句話直譯為「越匆促，速度就越慢」，也就是所謂的「欲速則不達」。除此之外，欲速則不達還有一個蠻常見的說法： “Haste makes waste.” 表示做事太匆忙就容易發生錯誤，而無形中就會造成不必要的浪費。
A: I must finish this assignment by tomorrow 9 p.m.
我必須在明天晚上九點之前完成這項作業。
B: Hey, more haste, less speed! Take it easy or else you may make unnecessary mistakes.
嘿，小心欲速則不達！輕鬆一點，要不然會犯下不必要的錯誤。
7. Hard words break no bones. 笑罵由人
當朋友受到言語攻擊時，可以用這句話表示你的關心，意指「惡言傷不到骨頭」，也就是「笑罵由人」的意思囉！
A: I can't believe Jessica's backstabbing me!
我不敢相信潔西卡在我背後說我壞話！
B: Hey listen, hard words break no bones, let's just ignore it.
聽著，笑罵由人，我們就別管她吧。
8. A friend in need is a friend indeed. 患難見真情
in need 這個詞組是指「在窮困中、處於困境、需要幫助」，而 indeed 作為副詞是指「確實、真正地」，所以整句話就是「在患難中（in need）的朋友才是真正（indeed）的朋友」。在這個社會中與他人相處交往，有福共享很簡單，有難同當卻不易；錦上添花雖然好，但雪中送炭更珍貴呀！
A: I didn’t notice who are my true friends until I am broke.
直到我破產了我才發現誰是我真正的朋友。
B: That's why people say a friend in need is a friend indeed.
所以大家才會說患難見真情嘛。
9. A rolling stone gathers no moss. 滾石不生苔
這句話可以用來鼓勵朋友走出舒適圈。roll 是「滾動」，moss 則是「青苔」，所以整句直譯是：「一顆滾動的石頭無法聚集青苔」，正向的解釋是若安於現狀，就永遠無法有亮麗的未來。現在會用來鼓勵人奮發向上、努力不懈。
A: I got a new job offer, but I can't make my mind.
我得到了一份工作機會，但我無法下定決心。
B: I think you should give it a try! People say a rolling stone gathers no moss.
我認為你應該試試看，滾石不生苔嘛。
10. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. 小別勝新婚
遇到為遠距離戀愛（long-distance relationship）所苦的朋友，你就可以對他說這句！absence 是「缺席、不在」，而 fonder 是 fond 的形容詞比較級，意思是「溫柔的、深情的」，所以整句話就是「人和人分開一段時間，感情會更好」。這句話不止適用於情人，也可以用來表達對家人、朋友、或是家鄉的思念哦！
A: My boyfriend is moving to London and I won’t be able to see him for a year.
我男朋友要搬到倫敦了，我將會有一年見不到他。
B: Don't worry. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
