美國向美國國旗以及美利堅合眾國表達忠誠的效忠宣誓詞最初由弗朗西斯·貝拉米撰寫，並於1942年被美國國會採納。1942年6月22日，美國國會第一次官方承認該宣誓誓詞為以下形式：
我謹宣誓效忠美利堅合眾國國旗及效忠所代表之共和國，未可分裂之一國，自由平等全民皆享。

美國曆史上從1892年開始到現在為止效忠宣誓詞經過4次修改，總共有5個版本分別是：
1892年版本：
內容是："I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
我謹宣誓效忠我的國旗及所代表之共和國，未可分裂之一國，自由平等全民皆享。
1892年至1922年版本：

1954年至今
內容是："I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
我謹宣誓效忠美利堅合眾國國旗及效忠所代表之共和國，上帝之下的國度，不可分裂，自由平等全民皆享。
值得一提的是1923年，全國國旗會議將宣誓中的“我的國旗”改為“合眾國國旗”，以幫助新移民區分自己出生國的旗幟和美國國旗。1924年，宣誓加上“美利堅”。來自伊利諾伊州的律師路易斯A.鮑曼首先提出在誓詞中添加“上帝之下”。美國國會在1954年正式加上“上帝之下”的字眼並沿用至今。
