國外新冠病毒疫情日益嚴峻，英國女王伊麗莎白二世於英國夏令時4月5日20:00發表電視講話，敦促英國民眾“自律"、"堅強”，鼓舞民眾團結一致，堅定信念，共渡“至暗時刻”。
除了每年一度的聖誕日外，女王發表全國講話極為罕見，在位68年，英國遭遇舉國危機、哀痛之際女王公開講話只有三次，新冠疫情中這一次是第四次。
歷史上，女王曾經四次發表特別演講，分別是在：
1991年：英國加入第一次海灣戰爭。女王呼籲國人為戰事“迅速”結束祈禱。
1997年：戴安娜王妃葬禮前夜，女王在白金漢宮發表講話。
2002年：母親葬禮前夜，女王發表特別演講。
女王在位期間還發表過另外一次演講，那一次的主題是喜慶：2012年慶祝她即位60週年的"鑽禧"慶典。
這段演講的視頻是在溫莎城堡內提前錄製好的。據悉，是由一位身著防護服的攝像師單獨進入溫莎城堡的白色會客室進行錄製的，其他工作人員則都在隔壁等待。
堪稱完美的英音，也是女王的一個象徵和標誌。每次女王發表演講，大家總是調侃“新的英語聽力材料又增加了”！

在演講的開頭，女王先奠定現在是“越來越具有挑戰性的時刻”，闡述疫情對普通民眾的影響。
