1.非其鬼而祭之,諂也;見義不為,無勇也。
It is not the spirit you are supposed to sacrifice, but you sacrifice it. This is flattery. It is cowardice to stand by what should have been done.
不是你應該祭的鬼神,你卻去祭它,這就是諂媚。見到應該挺身而出的事情,卻袖手旁觀,就是怯懦。
2.人而不仁,如禮何?人而不仁,如樂何?
A man without virtue, how can he practice propriety? How can a person use music without being kind and virtuous?
一個人沒有仁德,他怎麼能實行禮呢?一個人沒有仁德,他怎麼能運用音樂呢?
3.林放問禮之本,子曰:“大哉問!禮,與其奢也,寧儉;喪,與其易也,甯戚。”
林放問什麼是禮的根本。孔子回答說:“你問的問題意義重大,就禮節儀式的一般情況而言,與其奢侈,不如節儉。就喪事而言,與其儀式上治辦周備,不如內心真正哀傷。
Lin fang asked what was the root of the ceremony. The master replied, "the question you ask is of great significance, and in the general case of ritual, it is better to be thrifty than extravagant. As far as the funeral is concerned, it is better to be truly sad than to perform the ceremony.
4.君子無所爭,必也射乎!揖讓而升,下而飲。其爭也君子。
A gentleman has nothing to contend with. If anything, it's archery. In the competition, they bow to each other and then play. After firing, they bow to each other, then step down, and drink. This is the battle of the superior man.
君子沒有什麼可與別人爭的事情。如果有的話,那就是射箭比賽了。比賽時,先相互作揖謙讓,然後上場。射完後,又相互作揖再退下來,然後登堂喝酒。這就是君子之爭。
5.子夏問曰:“‘巧笑倩兮,美目盼兮,素以為絢兮’何謂也?”子曰:“繪事後素。”曰:“禮後乎?”子曰:“起予者商也,始可與言《詩經》已矣。”
Zi xia asked Confucius, "what a beautiful smile! What bright eyes! What do these words mean? The master said, "it means first having a white background and then drawing." Zi xia asked again, "then, does it mean that the ceremony is also something to come after?" The master said, "shang, you really are the one who inspires me. Now I can discuss the book of songs with you.
子夏問孔子:“‘笑得真好看啊,美麗的眼睛真明亮啊,用素粉來打扮啊。’這幾句話是什麼意思呢?”孔子說:“這是說先有白底然後畫畫。”子夏又問:“那麼,是不是說禮也是後起的事呢?”孔子說:“商,你真是能啟發我的人,現在可以同你討論《詩經》了。
