電影講述1921年，在風起雲湧的上海，局勢劍拔弩張，一群平均年齡僅28歲的熱血青年們，突破國際各股複雜勢力的監控和追蹤，創立中國共產黨的故事。
10月19日，《1921》導演黃建新、聯合導演鄭大聖和製片人任寧登臺，介紹道：“影片會在尊重史料的基礎上加入一些新的素材，更符合年輕觀眾的口味，也會站在新時代的角度審視那段歷史，給觀眾帶來新意。劇組在橫店新景區拍攝，拍到了正在逐漸搭建的上海灘，跟內容非常巧合。”
此外，《1921》劇組還於同日公開了電影中飾演中共一大代表的演員陣容：黃軒、袁文康、祖峰、竇驍、王仁君、張頌文、劉家禕、王俊凱、韓東君、劉昊然、張超、張雲龍、胡先煦。
