Where the Crawdads Sing
如果你经常关注欧美畅销书榜单，你可能会注意到一本名字有些奇怪的小说Where the Crawdads Sing，这本书从2018年夏天出版后就快速走红，至今在全球已经卖出超过500万本。
写这本书的人是美国动物学家Delia Owens，她从小就对自然产生了浓厚兴趣，并在大学期间主修动物学。在拿到博士学位后她和丈夫来到非洲，花了很多年时间研究动物习性以及栖息地，还创建了基金会以保护野生动物。在60多岁退休后作者发表了这部小说（同时也是她的第一部作品），书中涉及到的大量对动物以及自然的描写也与作者的野外生活经历有关。
小说以一个谋杀故事开篇：两个小男孩在沼泽地中发现了一具尸体，死者是小镇中有名的花花公子Chase Andrews。围绕这一案件的调查也即刻展开，人们逐渐怀疑起住在沼泽地中的女孩Kya Clark。作者接着又采用了另一条故事线叙事，介绍了“沼泽女孩”的身世背景：Kya Clark从小和家人住在北卡罗来纳州的一处沼泽地中，后来由于父亲的暴力倾向，母亲和兄弟姐妹们相继离家出走。等到Kya Clark十岁那年父亲也离她而去，只剩她一个人孤零零地生活在沼泽地中。她在大自然中学习各种生存技巧，并不断成长。在十四岁那年她遇到了小镇男孩Tate，Tate给了她教科书，并教给她各种文化知识，在这个过程中两个人产生了感情。但后来Tate因为要去外地读大学而离开了她，这让她又一次感到被抛弃。后来，她又被小镇另一名男子Chase Andrews吸引。在这段感情经历中，Kya Clark学会了抗争和成长，但这也将她和小说开头的凶杀案联系了起来。
小说标题中Crawdad是指“蝲蛄”（又称为“大头虾”），作者之所以取这么一个奇怪的书名跟她的成长经历有关。作者在访谈中提到小时候她的母亲经常鼓励她到野外玩，因为在野外动物表现出了最自然最本真的一面。她母亲经常说的一句话就是"Go way out yonder where the crawdads sing." 蝲蛄一般只在野外最幽静的地方吟唱，因此Where the Crawdads Sing可以指“大自然深处”。
这本书虽然是一部悬疑作品，但悬疑部分在书中并不重要。小说更多是关于一个女孩的成长历程以及自然之美。Kya Clark在成长过程中陆续被家人抛弃，遭到小镇居民歧视，甚至连初恋男友也离开了她，只有大自然给了她慰藉。在大自然里她学会了自给自足，从观察动物习性中她学会了生存的原则，可以说是大自然塑造了她。正如书中所写：

小说最令人印象深刻之处在于作者的文笔，她笔下的沼泽地是一个原始而浪漫的世界，书中很多描写读起来非常舒服。比如小说开篇对沼泽地有这样的描写：
Marsh is not swamp. Marsh is a space of light, where grass grows in water, and water flows into the sky. Slow-moving creeks wander, carrying the orb of the sun with them to the sea, and long-legged birds lift with unexpected grace—as though not built to fly—against the roar of a thousand snow geese.
这段描写画面感极强。作者将波光粼粼的沼泽地比作"a space of light"，并用"water flows into the sky"来形容水天相接的景象，非常形象准确。"carrying the orb of the sun with them to the sea"也很好地写出了太阳在小溪中的倒影随着小溪而缓缓移动的景象。
又比如作者写树林中树叶飘落有这样的句子：
And just at that second, the wind picked up, and thousands upon thousands of yellow sycamore leaves broke from their life support and streamed across the sky. Autumn leaves don’t fall; they fly. They take their time and wander on this, their only chance to soar. Reflecting sunlight, they swirled and sailed and fluttered on the wind drafts.
作者将秋天树叶被风吹落这一过程写得非常有诗意，Autumn leaves don’t fall; they fly. 这里fly一词准确写出了树叶迎风飞舞而非缓缓落下的特点。书中很多描写用词并不难，但读起来非常有美感，这种写作手法值得我们重点学习。
