安徽銀元局自光緒二十三年（1897）11月借用廣東機器試鑄起，至第二年3月正式鼓鑄，至光緒二十五年6月遵旨停鑄，前後只有一年半時間。但在這短短時間內，共鑄造600餘萬枚銀元，平均單日產量在萬枚左右。由此可見，當年安徽銀元局規模絕非一般。

據地方史志資料，安徽銀元局是在原火藥局舊址上擴建的，而火藥局“原在樅陽門內新塘中央（舊為宛在亭），因建銀元局移北門外馬山。”其具體方位，在安慶老城的西南角，包括現迎江區政府、人民路小學、三中及市立醫院部分，以及人民路由市立醫院至錫麟街這一段路面。安徽銀元局仿廣東造幣廠規模建造，擁有技術員工近500人，置辦機器20部。下設鑄模、校準、鎔銀、碾片、舂餅、光邊、烘洗、印紋（衝壓）、修理（配）等車間。因為是鑄造錢幣，管理十分嚴格。

此組安徽省造光緒元寶，嚴格地說，只是樣幣，它也不是安徽銀元局鑄造，而是由出售機器的德國廠商代鑄的。代鑄的金幣樣幣共五種幣值，分別是“庫平七錢二分”、“庫平三錢六分”、“庫平一錢四分四釐”、“庫平七分二釐”和“庫平三分六釐”。代鑄的銀元正面，有英文“ATSC”字樣。光緒二十四年7月鄧華熙向朝廷“進呈銀元式樣並陳辦理情形”時，其中5枚，就是德商代鑄的樣幣。代鑄樣幣未正式發行。錢幣收藏大家張璜《中國銀圓及銀兩幣圖錄》（1981），將這5枚樣幣列入“極為稀少品種”，但目錄上並沒有刊出“庫平三錢六分”的樣幣。美國PCGS將“安徽省造光緒元寶庫平三錢六分”評級SP62，為極其珍罕的存世孤品。另幾枚枚亦是經久未見。今重現於拍賣又將是一輪空前盛會。
