Green glazed pottery appeared earlier in China. As early as the Han Dynasty, a large number of green glazed pottery appeared. They were basically unearthed in tombs, and many of them were household utensils or animal models, such as green glazed pottery stoves, green glazed pottery wells, green glazed pottery buildings, green glazed pottery dogs, green glazed pottery chickens, etc. It can be seen that the green glazed pottery at that time was mainly used as funerary wares. The Han Dynasty green glaze is a low-temperature colored glaze, which uses copper oxide as colorant and lead as cosolvent and is melted and burned in a kiln at a temperature of about 700℃. The Han Dynasty was the most prosperous period for green glazed pottery. In the Three Kingdoms, Jin and Southern Dynasties, although green glaze was still made, its output and quality declined. During the Northern Dynasties, glazed pottery began to recover, with the appearance of pottery with green glaze added to yellow glaze or white glaze, which was also the embryonic form of the later Three Colors of Tang Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, there were a large number of tri-color ware, and green glaze was one of the important glaze colors. Tang tri-color ware was also low-temperature glazed pottery, in which copper oxide was used as colorant and lead as cosolvent. As is known to all, Gongyi kiln is an important kiln site for the firing of the Tang tri-colored glazed pottery. This kind of drum-bellied jar is commonly seen in the Tang tri-colored glazed pottery of Gongyi kiln.

At the same time as the tri-color pottery of Tang Dynasty was fired, the green glazed pottery of Gongyi kiln was of high quality. From 2002 to 2003, the kiln site of Huangye Kiln in Gongyi was excavated with green glaze artifacts, mainly including bowls, cups, jars and clear bottles. They belong to low-temperature colored glaze, with white makeup soil on the tires, pure glaze color and mostly plain surface without decoration (see "China Gongyi Kiln" June 2011 edition, China Overseas Chinese Publishing House). This green glaze lid jar should be the product of Gongyi kiln in Tang Dynasty from the point of view of embryo glaze and device type. Generally speaking, low-temperature glazed pottery is easy to lose glaze due to poor combination of glaze and embryo. The green glaze device of Gongyi kiln obviously solves this problem. The glaze of this green glaze lid jar is even and clean, and there is no loss of glaze. This should be closely related to the application of a fine layer of makeup soil before the glaze and the increase of firing temperature. Tang Dynasty is an important stage in the development history of Chinese ceramics. The author thinks that the styles of ceramics in Tang Dynasty are significantly different from those in Song Dynasty. First, the body of ceramics in Tang Dynasty is generally thick, while the body of ceramics in Song Dynasty is light and thin. Second, the Tang Dynasty porcelain is plump, while the Song Dynasty porcelain is more delicate. Third, the decoration of Tang Dynasty ceramics was simple, and there was no fine carved flower decoration on the implements. Although there were some applique decorations, most of them were pure color glazed implements with plain surface and no decoration, such as Tang Yue kiln celadon, Tang Xing kiln white porcelain and Tang Shouzhou kiln yellow glazed porcelain. Although green glaze is relatively rare in the Tang Dynasty, this Gongyi kiln green glaze lid jar is very consistent with the three major style characteristics of the above-mentioned Tang Dynasty ceramics: thick body, full vessel shape and simple decoration. The vessel also solves the problem of glaze removal well, and the aesthetic feeling of green glaze color is well displayed. The brilliant beauty and simplicity convey to us the charm from Datang.

This jar is full in shape, moist in green glaze, and delicate in matrix, which is rare in Tang Dynasty, and it is really rare for this jar to be preserved. This green glazed jar has an open mouth, a short neck, a slip shoulder, a bulging belly and a flat bottom. The top of the can and most of the can body are glazed. The glaze is emerald green and glossy. The tire is exposed near the foot. The carcass is coated with a fine layer of makeup soil, which is really rare and has high collection value.
