英語學習除了單詞，發音，語法以外還要掌握一定習語，習語是很難用語法講清楚的，他是通過英語文化思維引申而來，比如old cat字面意思是老貓，在俚語中表示老女人，因為cat是個習語單詞有女人的意思。

Foot the bill什麼意思？
英語to foot the bill是口語的idiom或者slang.
中文意思就是：結賬，付賬(均為書面語)，買單，埋單，我請客，算我的，我看數，我簽單等等(口語)。
如同中文表達有很多種一樣(你教外國人這麼多中文表達其實都是一個意思：結賬，他們一定“學”的一臉懵逼，頭都大！)
我們學英語時，情況也是一樣的：
When you say I will foot the bill,you mean I will pay “用英語學習英語”，我們需要有用這些同義英語表達“互為解釋”的能力，這本身也是“英語口語”。
Well, to foot the bill means I will pay the bill.It's my treat.It's on me.都是foot the bill的意思：When we say To foot the bill, we can also say We pay the bill.Or It's my treat.It's on me.
結賬時一般都是在“賬單”的bottom line(底線)簽字，簽單。這個地方也叫foot

Foot做動詞，不是foot(腳)，是bottom(底部)。這麼“理解”foot the bill就好懂了。

那麼為啥foot the bill是這個意思呢？大家不要把foot誤當成“腳”的意思。在英語裡，foot還有底部的意思，比如一片文檔的頁眉叫header，而頁腳叫footer。
而bill是賬單的意思，給咱們一個賬單，如果咱們付了款，是不是要籤個字？這個字簽到哪？簽在賬單的頁腳footer。所以foot the bill，就是簽字付賬的意思。也就是“付賬”的意思。
由此，我們就理解了，英文單詞也會有多個意思，弄錯了，就搞不懂，弄對了，就很容易理解了。

大家知道foot 作為名詞是“腳”的意思，作為動詞是“走，踏”的意思，於是乎有同學認為foot the bill 就是“踩著賬單”，可以引申為“不想付賬，賴賬”。告訴你，如果你這樣認為那就是大錯特錯。Foot the bill 的意思是“付賬，負擔費用”。為什麼呢？早在15世紀，人們便開始使用"foot the bill"這個短語，當時指的是把所有的帳目加起來計算出總和，並且把總金額寫在帳單的底部（foot of bill or account），foot的意思相當於底部bottom。發展到了19世紀，則輪到消費者"foot the bill"了，因為這個短語已經變成了“付帳，買單”的意思。這就是它的來由。翻開詞典，你也會發現foot 作為動詞，有“結算，支付”的意思。
