Established in 2000 as a micro-niche materials analysis and consulting firm, Orion investigated art, cultural property, and collectibles spanning more than 4,000 years of art history and technology in more than 1,800 projects for clients in five continents - an accomplishment without precedent in the international art world. In 2016, Sotheby's acquired Orion to become its worldwide Department of Scientific Research - a ground-breaking development in the worlds of art auctions and conservation science.

Uniquely trained as a painter, art conservator, and conservation scientist, James Martin founded Orion the same year he was elected as a Fellow in the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Objects; James built upon prior work to earn an international reputation as an esteemed expert in authenticity studies and disputes. James now leads an international team - as a department within Sotheby's - to research works and investigate questions about attribution and authenticity.

For more than twenty-five years, conservators and museums, galleries and auction houses, collectors, insurance companies, law firms, and the F.B.I./U.S. Department of Justice relied on James to provide accurate information about the construction, composition, and condition of materials and works.
