Feeding the hungry

語篇導讀：健康營養的食物對人體非常重要。但現在仍有許多人吃不到健康的食物，甚至還有人在忍受飢餓。針對這個問題，公益組織Philabundance採取了行動。

Do you know exactly where the food you donate (捐贈) goes? In the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area, a lot of it ends up at Philabundance. The organization (組織) is trying to make healthy food accessible (可得到的) to everyone.

Last year, Philabundance gave out more than 25 million pounds of food to neighborhood organizations. More than 2 million pounds came from food-collecting activities, including the ones held at area schools.

The importance of fruits and vegetables

A big problem for many food banks is being able to offer fresh fruits and vegetables to people in need. Philabundance helps with that. The organization gets a lot of the fresh produce it gives out from ships along the river. It also gets food from the backs of stores and the central food market.

"Philabundance does a good job collecting and giving out food," says Bassam Awadalla, a member of the organization's board.

Working together

The Food Center at the Morrisville Presbyterian Church is among the organizations that gets produce from Philabundance. "It is a huge part of our operation (行動)," says Carol Romano, a Food Center director. "Sometimes, the produce that families get here is the only produce they get for the whole month." He noticed that people most appreciate (感激) produce and meat. Fresh produce can be hard to find in cities, and meat is expensive.

When asked for advice on the best kinds of foods to donate, Philabundance workers said that there is always a need for healthy foods without a lot of added sugar.

Philabundance and food stores are working together to help the community, getting food to people in need, including children.
