Describe a historical period you would like to know.

You should say:

When it was

How you heard of it

What are you interested in

What you have known

And Why you would like to know more.

Sample answer

Ok, so…emmm, A historical period I would like to know is the 90s, a time during which I was born.

As you may have known, the 90s is a fascinating time for my country. As China had just opened herself up to the world, everything back then started to change very quickly. For example, imported merchandise started to appear in our lives, and western movies and TV shows became more and more popular in China.

So…Growing up, I often hear my parents talking about how the 90s is a golden period for those who are willing to work hard and make their lives better. I think, till this day, my parents are still nostalgic about the 90s because that’s the time when everybody’s life started to get better and my parents realized their dreams.

So, I was fascinated by the 90s myself because, as a student who majored in macro economy, I’ve always being interested in how global trading brought mutual benefits to both china and the rest of the world. I believe China’s GDP started to grow exponentially ever since she joined the WTO, and it took her less than two decades to become a successful economical super power in the world, second only to the U.S.

I want to know more about what happened to Chinese workers and factories, as well as the country’s economy and society, to see if other countries can copy whatever China did in the 90s and to make their lives better. Well, that’s all I can think of so far, thank you.

Part 3

1. How do you learn history?

2. How can we protect old buildings?

3. What’s the difference between history taught in primary school and the history taught in high school?

4. Why do some people have no interest in history?

1. How do you learn history?

Sample answer

Well, In China, most students take history classes in school. As a matter of fact, history is such an important subject that it is included in the University Entrance Exams in China. Also, there are a lot of history books in China, like the ones about ancient Chinese literature, or the ones about specific dynasties. So there are a lot of places to get them if you are interested. The last one I can think of is watching TV, as there are tons of shows and programs based on real historical stories, which is really fun to watch.

2. How can we protect old buildings?

Sample answer

Well, In my opinion, both the citizens and the government should share the responsibilities to better protect our valuable old buildings. The government, of course, needs to provide better city construction plans and enough money for building maintenance. The more money the government provides, the better the protection is. Also, it is important to raise people’s awareness of the significance of our buildings, avoiding unnecessary damage coming from ignorant citizens.

3. What’s the difference between history taught in primary school and the history taught in high school?

Sample answer

Interesting. As far as I can remember, in primary school, we only learned the very basics of history, like “how many dynasties are there?”and “When the great wall of China was built” . And also, we don’t reflect on the things we learned, our teacher just showed us the facts and expected us to remember them. The history lessons in high school, however, is vastly different than that of primary school,in that it has more details and students are expected to reflect on the past, and to investigate implications for the future.

4. Why do some people have no interest in history?

Sample answer

Well, I don’t speak for everyone, but I think people who show zero interest inhistory deemed it as a boring subject. To be more specific, in classes, most history teachers just repeat the words on the textbook and expect you to remember them, which makes the lesson extremely tedious. And Also, learning history sometimes means to read a lot of literatures and memorize them, which makes learning history unnecessarily hard. So…Yeah, that’s why some people show little interest in learning history.

I don’t speak for everyone

Show zero interest

Deem 視作

Extremely 極其地

To be more specific

Tedious
