I went to Shanghai last June 2019 for work. I stayed there for almost a week. I was alone.

I’m a Filipino, and though there is a tension (well, based on media) between China and the Philippines, I felt alright the moment I arrived at their airport. It was my first time to be in China.

I knew I would normally experience the overpriced unmetered taxi, but as I step outside, an airport staff had been calling me asking if I need a taxi. I wanted to do it on my own, so I said I can manage. I stepped out, rode on a taxi, had the words “Can you take me to Crowne Plaza Century Park Shanghai” translated to Chinese on my phone.

I traveled for about an hour. The language barrier was too much as the driver couldn’t speak in English. When I arrived at the hotel, I was surprised he didn’t mandate any tip and even gave me the exact change. The hotel staff welcomed me and finally, I had some people to talk to me in English.

Most of the answers basically sum up how Shanghai is for a tourist but not how it is to actually live there. Living somewhere is a whole different ball game.

I myself am very interested in Chinese culture and history and took a holiday here in 2015 for two weeks, seeing Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing and Beijing. Now I live and work here and am in no doubt that I made the right choice to live in Shanghai as opposed to somewhere else. Here’s why:

As a foreigner you will start to miss things about your home no matter how great your interest for your host country. Shanghai has it all.

Basically anything you miss about your home you can find here, though you may pay over the odds for it. There are many international supermarkets here such as CitySuper and Carrefour in which you can find most ingredients in European and American cooking.

In addition, Shanghai also has areas which can make you feel at home, or at least, somewhere close to home. For instance, a great new bar area that opened up is Found 158:

It is below ground level and has a very nice design. To me, it is reminiscent of my holidays to places in Portugal or Spain where everyone can relax outside with a drink on a nice balmy evening. It has Italian, Mexican, Turkish and other bars/restaurants.

There is also the French Concession, which is actually much larger than just Tianzifang. It has a lot of European villas of different styles and there are no high-rise buildings. Even on a sunny Saturday it is surprisingly peaceful and quiet and a lovely place to ride on the Mobike or Ofo (rentable bicycles you can take and leave pretty much anywhere for almost no cost). If you want to business in Shanghai, it’s the perfect place. The economic grows so fast and there are a lot of opportunity to develop new business. But if you want to discover new culture, it’s better to go to others cities like in Xiamen. Of course, you can see very typical place in Shanghai like the lilong. Unfortunaly, the most of the house are very modern.

If it’s your first time in China and you don’t to be disoiented, you may like Shanghai. There are very nice restaurant. You can easily find western restaurant if you don’t like Chinese food. Also, most of the Chinese are also very nice and polite.

如果你想在上海做生意，那是个完美的地方。 经济增长非常快，有很多发展新业务的机会。 但是如果你想发现新的文化，最好去其他城市，比如厦门。 当然，你可以看到上海非常古典的地方，比如里弄。 不幸的是，大部分的房子都很现代化。

如果这是你第一次来中国，你不会被排挤，你可能会喜欢上海。 那里有很不错的餐厅。 如果你不喜欢中餐，你可以很容易地找到西餐厅。 此外，大多数中国人也非常友好和有礼貌。
