date from (從某一時代)開始，回溯
This custom dates from the 16th century.
這風俗起源於16世紀。
The church dates from 1176.
這座教堂是1176年建的。
【注】date from 也可說成date back to，均指“自某時起存在至今”(＝have existed since)，兩者均不能用於被動語態。順便說一句，這類句子通常用一般現在時，而不用一般過去時，除非所談論的事物現在已不復存在。
如：
The church, which dated back to the 13th century, was destroyed in an earthquake two years ago.
那座教堂是13世紀建成的，兩年前在一次地震中被毀了。
differ from 與……不同，與……意見不一致
Iron differs from lead.
鐵與鉛不同。
I beg to differ from you on that question.

know from 區分；分清
The boy doesn’t know his left from his right.

Your failure resulted from not working hard enough.

The terrible accident resulted from his carelessness.

We were suffering from poverty.

He discouraged me from undertaking the work.

I drew money from the bank.

We were excused from punishment.

The teacher excused me from exercise because I had a cold.

hear from 從……聽來；收到……的來信
I heard this from my friend.
這是我從朋友那聽來的。
I heard from my parents last week. 我上週收到了父母的來信。
keep (…) from 避開，忍住；對……隱瞞（保密）
He keeps from alcohol and tobacco.
他煙酒不沾。
I can’t keep from laughing.
我忍不住大笑。
We thought it best to keep the bad news from him.
我們認為，這壞消息最好不讓他知道。
I was so excited that I couldn’t keep the good news from her any longer.
我太激動了，再也沒法對她隱瞞這個好消息了。
prevent …from 阻止……做（某事）
Nobody can prevent us from getting married.
誰也不能阻止我們結婚。
They took action to prevent the disease from spreading.

Minors are prohibited from drinking.

We are trying to save the school from closure.

This patient should be separated from the others.

A large river separates the north of the city from the south.

steal … from 從……偷（竊取）
He stole a bun from the shop.
