On a run: Adidas
Prospects continue to look bright for the German sportswear-maker, which unveils annual results today. The boss, Kasper Rorsted, said in February that sales rose last year by 15-20%, getting above €20bn ($24bn), thanks to demand in America and in China, which offers the juiciest margins.
The firm has outperformed rivals recently, though the whole sector looks healthy—as the global economy jogs along, so consumers spend more money on sportswear. (Puma, Adidas’s neighbour—the firms were launched by feuding brothers—has recovered after years of struggling. Nonetheless its owner, Kering, will spin it off next month.)
Adidas’s share price has more than tripled since early 2015. Sales this year, especially in Europe, will be lifted further by the football World Cup, in June.
Watch closest for online sales. The firm said last year these would be worth €4bn by 2020, up from €1bn in 2016, as young shoppers increasingly use their thumbs to shop for their feet.
