I was having dinner at a restaurant when Tony Steel came in.
(我正在一家飯館吃飯，Tony Steel走了進來。故事：過去進行時對應過去時，Tony 進來的時候，我正在吃飯)
Tony worked in a lawyer's office years ago, but he is now working at a bank.
(Tony 曾經在一家律師事務所工作，現在在一家銀行上班。過去和現在發生的事：過去時和現在時)
He gets a good salary, but he always borrows money from his friends and never gets pays it back.
(他的薪水很高，但是他總是向朋友借錢 ，並且他從來不還。介紹“他”現在的情況，一般現在時)
Tony saw me and came and sat at the same table.
(Tony看見了我，就走過來和我坐在一張桌子前。回到故事：一般過去時)
He has never borrowed money from me.
(他從來沒有向我借過錢。現在完成時：過去已經發生的動作)
While he was eating, I asked him to lend me twenty pounds.
（當他吃飯的時候，我提出向他借20英鎊。)
To my surprise, he gave me the money immediately.
(令我大吃一驚，他立刻把錢給我了)
“I have never borrowed any money from you" Tony said. "so now you can pay for my dinner!"
(Tony 說：“我從來沒有向你借過錢，所以說，現在你可以替我付飯錢了”)
