作為連詞，when有兩種功能，一是用作並列連詞（已在Episode 1中進行了講解），二是充當從屬連詞。本集就來講一講作為從屬連詞的when的幾種常見用法。
I. 引導時間狀語從句
1. About 3,700 people were on the Diamond Princess when it arrived at the port on February 3.
2. When I was ten years old, I got along well with my brother.
從上面兩個例句中，我們可以看出when的意思是“當……時候”，既可以表示一點時間（at the time）也可表示一段時間(during the time)。同時我們也要關注when的省略句，如：
3. When (I was) walking along the street, I met a friend of mine.
4. When (she was) asked about her age, Jane said it was a secret.
5. When (I was) in university, I went to the library twice a week.
II. 引導定語從句
6. I’ll never forget the days when we stayed together.
7. 4 o’clock was the hour when I used to get up in the morning.
引導定語從句時，when在從句中作時間狀語，即可表示一段時間（in/during the days），也可表示一點時間（at 4 o’clock）。
III. 引導名詞性從句
8. When we will set out tomorrow is not decided yet. （主語從句）
9. I knew when he came back home last night. （賓語從句）
10. The problem is when we can collect so much money. （表語從句）
11. I have no idea when he was studying in this university. （同位語從句）
when引導名詞性從句時既可以指一段時間，也可指一點時間；同時when既可以指確定的時間，相當於狀語從句和定語從句中的when，也可指不確定的時間，相當於特殊疑問詞when的含義。另外，注意when to do sth.的用法，如：
12. You’ll be informed when to leave for New York tomorrow.
