客户邀请的聚餐，Emily想让外籍同事Larry一道去。结果Larry回答她：It's not really my thing. Why don't you go ahead without me?
Emily气得火冒三丈。她以为Larry这句话是「这不是我的事情」。其实口吻稍有不同，如果知道真的含意，也许不会那么生气。
It's not really my thing.
错误：这不是我的事／这不是我的东西。
正确：这事我不太擅长（可能是不会或不喜欢）。
这里的thing指天生的能力或偏好。当人说not my thing时，是指Not something one particularly enjoys or is good at. 不是特别会做，或特别想做的。
再看一个例句，熟练一下：
School isn’t my thing. I just want to get a job. 读书不是我的专长，我想找份工作。
Thing这个字，字面意义很含糊，模糊空间很大，一起来看看容易弄错的几个用法。
1. This is a thing.
错误：这是个东西。
正确： 这很流行。
”A thing” 是新近流行用词，指一种潮流、时尚、新玩意，有点接近中文的「夯」。
Mom jeans are a thing now in the fashion world. 老妈牛仔裤在时尚界很流行。
如果讲成了问句 Is this even a thing?
就有点讽刺意味，相当于英文的 ”Does this even exist?” 像中文的「这样也行？／这算哪门子事？」
2. Have a thing about…..可能是很喜欢或很讨厌
Thing的模糊在这个片语很明显，是（莫名其妙地）喜欢或讨厌，得从句意判断才知道。
Ben's got a thing about Harley Davidson - he's got three of them. Ben很喜欢哈雷，他有3辆。
She's got a thing about spiders - she won't go near them. 她很怕蜘蛛，总是离得远远的。
3. For one thing 首先、一来
这个thing和东西也没有关系，而是要讲原因之前的发语词，引起人的注意。
A：Why won't you come to New York with me? 你为什么不跟我去纽约？
B：For one thing, I don't like flying, and for another, I can't afford it." 一来，我不喜欢坐飞机；再者，我买不起机票。
