情态动词(Modal verbs)本身具有各种意义,可表达说话者的语气和情感。情态动词属于助动词的一种,不能单独使用,需要与动词原形一起构成句子的谓语,另外情态动词没有人称和数的变化,情态动词后必须跟动词原形。情态(助)动词实际上是谓语动词的组成部分,比如 “I could do the paper work for you,if you are too busy”,could do 共同构成谓语。

情态动词是中国英语学习者的难点,有些情态动词可以互换,但又有细微区别,需要学生细心甄别。学习语法之余还需要在生活中多多地运用,进入情境可以帮助孩子真正将语法内化为自己的语言。如果不知道如何在生活中运用,文末会有情态动词的相关游戏,多玩几次,帮助也会很大。

1. Modal Verbs

▲What can you do?

▲Modal verbs

A modal verb is an auxiliary verb that expresses necessity or possibility. English modal verbs include: must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may, and might.

We use modal verbs to show if we believe something is certain, probable or possible (or not). We also use modals to do things like talking about ability, asking permission, making requests and offers, and so on.

常见情态动词有:must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may和 might,表示说话人的语气、情感、态度、猜测(可能性),可用于表达能力、许可、义务、可能发生的事情等。

e.g. Tom can write poetry very well.

You may not wear sandals to work.

Shall we go for a walk?

We should remember some important points about the grammatical usage of modal auxiliaries.使用情态动词需要注意:

Modal auxiliaries always go with the main verb. They cannot stand alone. 不能单独使用,只能和主要动词一起构成谓语。

e.g. I used to run 10 miles a day in my

childhood.

She would feel lost whenever she got

into trouble.

Modal auxiliaries don’t undergo changes according to the person and number of the subject(With modal verbs, there is only one form of it for every subject pronoun).没有人称和数的变化。

e.g. I can touch the tree.

We can play the piano.

Mr. Austen can sing Spanish songs.

Could I take this seat, sir, if you don't mind ?

Only the base form of the verb should be used after modal auxiliaries.(A modal verb is followed by an infinitive verb without to)后面跟动词原形

e.g. I think you may drive my car, but be careful.

What do you think I should do with the problem ?

Affirmative form 肯定式Subject + modal verb + infinitive without "to" .

e.g. She can teach you if she likes.

You may use my pen.

We will go for a picnic next week.

I would rather quit than submit to undue pressure.

When I was a child, I could play outside all day.

Negative form 否定式,We just put "not' after the modal verbs to form the negative .

Subject + modal verb+ not + infinitive without "to" .

e.g. You may not use my pen.

We will not go for a picnic next week.

Question form 疑问式

In both positive and negative forms, we can form a question sentence, modal verb is written at the beginning of the positive question sentences, the negative modal verb is written at the beginning of the negative question sentences.

e.g. -Can we go south this summer for vacation?

-Yes, of course you can . / Yes , you can.

-Can’t they drive this car?

-No, they can't .

-Must I leave now ?

-No, you needn't.
