Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, endorsed① Joe Biden as the Democratic Party continued to coalesce② around its presumptive③ presidential nominee. In a video released last Monday morning, Pelosi drew on④ her years of working with Biden behind the scenes⑤ on legislation when he was Obama’s vice president, describing Biden as “a leader with the humility to seek expertise and science, and the confidence to act upon⑥ it.” Biden now has the formal support of the party’s last president, Barack Obama; two of its most prominent progressives⑦, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren; two previous presidential nominees, John Kerry and Al Gore; and its leader in the House, Pelosi. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds announced the birth① of a son last Wednesday. A spokesperson for them said both mother and baby were “doing very well②.” Johnson, who has just recovered from COVID-19, was present in the hospital throughout the birth③. He and Symonds are the first unmarried couple to move into Downing Street together. The baby is Symonds’ first child, while Johnson have fathered④ five. (BBC)

03remdesivir approved by FDA美國食藥局批准瑞德西韋

Gilead Sciences, an American drugmaker, reported positive results from a key clinical trial of its experimental① antiviral drug, remdesivir. Preliminary results from the American government trial showed that patients given the drug had a 31% faster recovery time than those who received a placebo②. Anthony Fauci, America’s senior infectious diseases expert, described the finding as “really quite important.” A separate, peer-reviewed③ study published in The Lancet, however, found the drug had no positive effect. Last Friday, America’s Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization that would allow doctors to use remdesivir to treat patients who are hospitalized with serious cases of COVID-19. It becomes the FDA’s first authorised therapy for the disease. Gilead is donating 1.5m vials④. (The Economist Espresso and The Washington Post)

North Korean state-run media reported that Kim Jong Un made an appearance at a May Day celebration, which would be his first public appearance in about three weeks. “Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un Cuts Tape For Completion Of Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory,” the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. KCNA says there was a “completion ceremony of the factory” last Friday, “the international holiday of the working people of the whole world.” KCNA released a still② photograph purportedly③ showing Kim at the ceremony. The picture shows him cutting a red ribbon④, with his sister Kim Yo-jong standing behind him. (CNN)

There was some hope for the travel industry from China last Sunday, where internal① travel saw a large increase on 1 May, the first day of a long holiday weekend. The jump in travel was led by Wuhan, epicentre② of the coronavirus epidemic. The number of people travelling outside their home cities leapt nearly 50% at the start of the Labour day weekend, compared with the first day of a holiday on 4 April. China reported two only new coronavirus cases for 2 May, up from one the day before, data from the country’s national health authority showed on Sunday. In the meantime, Warren Buffett, the legendary American investor, has sold his firm’s entire holdings③ in the four major US airlines④.
