一、課文原文
Lesson 69 The car race
There is a car race near our town every year. In 1995, there was a very big race.
There were hundreds of people there. My wife and I were at the race. Our friends, Julie and Jack were there, too. You can see us in the crowd. We are standing on the left.
There were twenty cars in the race. There were English cars, French cars, German cars, Italian cars, American cars and Japanese cars.
It was an exciting finish. The winner was Billy Stewart. He was in car number fifteen. Five other cars were just behind him.
On the way home, my wife said to me, “Don’t drive so quickly! You’re not Billy Stewart!”

二、每課一句
There were hundreds of people there.
本課繼續學習一般過去時，但側重的是There was/were的用法，主要用來描述過去在某地有某人或某物。其基本用法為：
There was/were + 名詞 + 地點
其中，was的後面接的是單數可數名詞或不可數名詞，were的後面接的是複數可數名詞。
如：
There were hundreds of people there.
其否定句為：
There was/were + not + 名詞 + 地點
如：
There were not hundreds of people there.
其一般疑問句為：
Was/Were + there + 名詞 + 地點
如：
- Were there hundreds of people there?
- Yes, there were.
- No, there weren't.
其特殊疑問句的用法為：
特殊疑問詞 + was/were + there + 名詞 + 地點
如：
Where were there hundreds of people?
【注意】
本課出現了一般過去時的新標誌性詞語，即：in+過去年份或年代，如：
in 2003 在2003年
in the 1970s 在二十世紀七十年代

注意在雙課第70課中，出現了表時間的介詞at、on、in的用法，其基本區別是：
1、at+時刻，如：
at 7 o'clock 在七點整
at seven past nine 在九點過七分
at two to two 在兩點差兩分（即一點五十八分）
2、on+星期或日期，如：
on Sunday 在週日
on January 1st 在1月1日（在元旦）
3、in+月份/季度/年份，如：
in April 在四月份
in spring 在春天
in 2020 在2020年
