refrigerator
refrigerators中文譯為“冰箱”,又可以簡稱為fridge,也可以叫icebox,主要功能是讓食物保鮮不易變壞。如果要出去郊遊,沒辦法帶冰箱出門時,我們還可以把食物放在 cooler(便攜冷箱)中保鮮。 refrigerator眼 freezer(冷庫)不同點在於freezer會讓食物結凍變硬,保存期限也相對變長。國外的家庭中通常有一個 refrigerator來存放保鮮食品,但可能有好幾個 freezer存放冷凍食品。
oven
oven中文解釋為“烤箱”,主要的功能是用來烘培 bread(麵包)、cake(蛋糕)或烘烤beef(牛肉)、 turkey(火雞)、lamb(羊肉)、 lasagna(意大利幹層面)等食物。在歐美,oven位於stove(爐子)的下方,跟常見的獨立式烤箱不一樣,真正的oven體積大很多,大到可以烤整隻火雞!另外與oven相關的詞語有: microwave oven(微波爐)、 convection oven(對流加熱烤箱)、oven mitt(防熱手套)等。
tableware
tableware是一個集合名詞,泛指所有的餐具。一般來說包括了knife(刀)、 spoon(湯匙)\ fork(叉子)。在去西餐廳時,我們常常會把大大小小的刀叉弄混。一般簡易的擺法如下:以plate(盤子)為中心擺放餐具,在盤子的左手邊由裡向外分別放 place fork(吃主食用的叉子)、 salad fork(甜點叉子);在plate的右手邊則分別放knife(吃主食用的刀子)、 salad knife(色拉刀)及spoon(湯匙)。餐具使用的順序則是“由外而內”。
Use
use當名時,最常見的解釋是“用途;使用”例 Do you have any use for the newspapers over there?(那些報紙你有其他的用途嗎?) I am surprised to see this old typewriter is still in use(看到這臺日打字機還能用,我很驚訝,)而在這裡則當動詞用解釋為“使用”。例如: Can I use your computer? (我可以用一下你的電腦嗎?)常見的短語有 be no use(無用處的)、 be of use(有用的).
pour
pour當動詞用,表示“傾倒;下大雨;不斷湧現”的意思,例: Would you pour a glass of milk for me? (請幫我倒一杯牛奶好嗎?) The rain was pouring outside(外面在下大雨。) Telephone complaints continue to pour in.(投訴電話蜂湧而來。)
