Harvard will offer all of its classes for the next school year online, even as some students will be allowed back on campus amid the coronavirus pandemic, the school said Monday.

Harvard’s faculty of arts and sciences said Monday it is planning to bring up to 40 percent of undergraduate students to campus, including all freshmen for the fall semester.

The university said in a statement it is also allowing “those who must be on campus to progress academically” to return in the fall as well.

Harvard will, however, offer all course instruction for undergraduate and graduate courses in the next academic year online.

“Students will learn remotely, whether or not they live on campus,” the nation's oldest college said in a statement.

Harvard said its priority “at this time” is to bring seniors back to campus.

“Harvard was built for connection, not isolation. Without a vaccine or effective clinical treatments for the virus, we know that no choice that reopens the campus is without risk,” the school said in a post updating on the school's reopening plan.

“That said, we have worked closely with leading epidemiologists and medical experts to define an approach that we believe will protect the health and safety of our community, while also protecting our academic enterprise and providing students with the conditions they need to be successful academically," it added.

Nearly every school nationwide shut down campuses in the spring amid the coronavirus pandemic, with many universities and school districts switching to virtual classes.

Some schools have announced plans to bring students back to campuses in the fall, with additional requirements in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus and, in many cases, expanded online classes.
