隕石是來自地球以外太陽系其它天體的碎片。大部分隕石是來自火星和木星的軌道之間的一條小行星帶，那就是隕石的故鄉，那些小行星在自己軌道運行，並不斷地發生著碰撞，有時就會被撞出軌道奔向地球。小行星在進入地球大氣層時，與之摩擦發出光熱便是流星。流星進入大氣層時，產生的高溫、高壓與內部不平衡，而發生爆炸，就形成隕石雨，未燃盡者落到地球上，就成了隕石，也稱“隕星”。
