Disney said that it would choose young Chinese actress Liu Yifei as the lead for its live-action film Mulan.
The movie, which will be shown in 2019, tells the classic Chinese story of a brave woman who joined the army to protect her country and her family.
Liu has already been in many Chinese period dramas (戏剧). Her beautiful looks in those dramas have also earned her the name of "Fairy Sister".
Liu is known as one of the New Four Dan Actresses in China. She has had a strong fan base since entering show business in 2002 at the age of 15, starring in The Story of a Noble Family. One year later, famous writer Jin Yong, who's known for his martial arts stories (武侠小说), chose Liu to play a part in the TV adaptation (改编本) of his classic Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. Now, Liu has a strong fan following, with over 53 million fans on Weibo.
Liu made her Hollywood breakthrough with The Forbidden Kingdom (2008). The film, built around the Chinese classic story Journey to the West, was directed by Rob Minkoff. Liu was picked to play a role in another Hollywood film, Outcast in 2014. She starred with Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen.
From Chinese Paladin (2005) to The Return of the Condor Heroes (2006), Liu is used to playing leads in action-packed Chinese period dramas. In her film, Once Upon a Time, Liu plays an immortal woman (女神仙) reconnecting with a love from a past life.
Besides being an actress, Liu also had a short singing career. She signed with Sony Music Entertainment and was sent to Japan for a year-long singing and dancing training programme. She has made one Chinese album (唱片) and a Japanese album.
