清乾隆年间(18世纪中期)，国外银元开始大量流入我国，其中最为常见的有西班牙银元、墨西哥鹰洋、英国和日本银元等。具有统一价格标准的外国银元进入中国市场后，给清代货币带来了极大的冲击。而外国银元外形一致，价格几乎相当，使用方便，一进入中国市场就广受欢迎，虽然清政府一再禁止外国银元的流通，却遏制不了外国银元流通越来越广的趋势。
光绪元宝是清朝光绪年间流通的货币之一。洋务运动后，两广总督张之洞曾于光绪十三年（1887年）委托使英大臣在英国订购全套造币机器，并在广东钱局首铸机制银元和铜元。其后，各省纷纷仿效，购制国外机械铸造银、铜元。包括广东钱局在内，许多造币机均订购自著名的英国伦敦伯明翰造币有限公司。英国大工业的介入，使银币也沾染上西方色彩。钱币正面鲜然可见满汉文化的融合，而钱背却明确标示了西方文化的介入。但北洋造光绪元宝由于不便于流通使用，故铸额极其稀少，更显珍贵。

Guangxu Yuanbao was one of the currencies circulated in Guangxu during the Qing Dynasty. After the Westernization Movement, Governor Zhang Zhidong of Guangzhou and Guangzhou commissioned the British Minister to order a complete set of coin machines in the UK in 1887, and first minted silver and copper dollars in the Guangdong Money Bureau. Subsequently, the provinces have copied and purchased foreign machinery for casting silver and copper. Many coins, including the Guangdong Money Bureau, are ordered from the famous London Birmingham Mint Co., Ltd. The involvement of Great Britain has made silver coins stained with Western colors. The fusion of Manchu culture can be seen on the front side of the coin, while Qian Bei clearly indicates the involvement of western culture. But Beiyang creates Guangxu Yuanbao because it is not easy to circulate, so the amount of casting is very rare and precious.
今中古文化有幸征集到一枚北洋造光绪元宝（库平七钱二分）银币，此枚北洋造光绪元宝库平七钱二分，钱币正面铸有铭文，顶部铸楷体“北洋造”三字，底部铸货币价值“库平七钱二分”雕刻，中心直读“光绪元宝”四字，币中心为满文“光绪元宝”，背面中央为神龙图腾，纹路如刀刻所成，铸造工艺神乎其技，龙身纹路精美，色泽艳丽明快，自然纯正，光洁细润，并有云海衬托，看上去仿佛是一幅神龙翱翔天际油画，极其瑰丽，美得动人心魄！反面左侧阿拉伯数字表明该币为光绪34年版，外圈顶部铸英文“北洋造”，下部为英文“库平七钱二分”。钱币的版面设计优雅，而且存世量极为稀少，是收藏界精品，知名度极大的一种，具有无法估量的学术与历史价值。
